News from the Principal and Assistant Principal

It’s hard to believe that we already find ourselves half way through the third term of 2021. Whilst it has not been the most ideal term, I we are all very keen to have students back on site as soon as possible.

Following this week's Victorian government announcement, Remote and Flexible learning will be extended until Thursday 2nd September at 11.59pm. This means (at this stage) students will return to school on Friday 3rd September.

Once again the Chelsea Primary community continues to support each other to ensure we are doing everything we can to safeguard the health of our students, staff and parents.

Thank you for all that you are doing to support your child/children at home. It truly is a team effort with the students, teachers and parents working together. As we have said from the very beginning, we understand that students and parents will do what they can at home and will choose to adjust the learning activities to suit the needs of the children on a daily basis.

Foundation News

What’s Been Happening?
We were so fortunate to celebrate our 100 days of prep prior to lockdown. It was such a great day and we are happy to see the kids have started colouring their hair to cover the greys…haha.

Although we have been struck by another lockdown it hasn’t stopped the fun our students have whilst learning.

In mathematics we have been learning about sequencing numbers from 1-20 and also counting back from 20. You may have seen pictures of our Potato Olympics just before lockdown which was such a hoot! Our potatoes participated in sprints, rolls, jumping and flying events. It was great fun and an awesome introduction to the Olympics.

In Phonics we have been focussing on the floss rule and the magic ‘e’ rule. We have had a great time learning about people that eat too much cake and hide in a cave!

In writing we have been learning about food and food production. We have been creating lists of animal and plant products and have been looking at cook book and writing recipes. We were also very fortunate to have a visit from Chef Pepi, Chef Gallo and Chef I in our live session where they cooked pancakes for us and the students were able to write the ingredients and method.

What’s coming up?
As lockdown continues, we will continue to have fun online!

A huge thankyou to all families supporting your children through this lockdown. Please look after yourselves and let us know if you need anything.

The Prep Team
Miss I, Mr Pepi and Miss Gallo

We would just like to thank you all for your support over the last two weeks. Now we are in for another 2 week extension but we will get there and we will continue to put in our best efforts to support you all.  We will be continuing with the same format for the next two weeks but Well- Being Wednesday’s are being reintroduced.

It has been great seeing everyone online and at school!

We appreciate all the effort it takes to get the students online and doing their work. It is a big ask for you all!

Here is a memory that I love from our last day onsite at school.

Middle School News

Students across the state, or nationally even, will be the most resilient learners the country has produced in history!  Just when we think we are into a routine, our daily life is readjusted as we move in and out of remote learning.  Observations across the cohort of year 3 and 4 students show that they are doing the best they can with the learning that is in place.  And for that, we must send a huge thankyou to students and their families for all that they are doing during these different and difficult times.

Even though learning is currently being done remotely, we are progressing through our curriculum.  The current writing focus is on producing well detailed Information Reports, allowing students to create a booklet, showing how much they know about a topic of their choice.  This focus is great for students in many aspects, as it affords them opportunity to learn researching techniques, build summarising skills, and unleash their creativity as they produce the pages for their booklets.  We are beginning to see some amazing works by our students!

Our maths Number focus this term is fractions.  There is so much to cover in this topic, from understanding what fractions represent, how they relate to decimals, and furthermore how percentages can be representative of these 'parts of things'.  Students are exposed to high-level thinking as they not only show understanding of the topics but are manipulating fractions as we learn to simplify them, identify equivalent fractions, and calculate percentages of amounts.

National Science week falls in Week 6 of Term 3 and provides a nice detour in thinking processes as students and families can engage in our own Chelsea Primary School Science Expo online!  There will be a myriad of experiments modelled by our wonderful staff, which students can do on their own while at home.  So much fun!

Lastly, I would like to remind everyone that we are here for you.  You and your family's wellbeing is of upmost priority during these lockdowns, so if there is anything you need or anything we can help with, please feel free to reach out to your classroom teacher or the school.

Take care and look after yourselves.

Simon Maddock, Vicki Middleton and David Hewet.

Senior School News

The senior school students have been chipping away at some fun and indulging learning activities throughout online learning this week. We have been creating some Oscar worthy podcasts, listening to some Oscar worthy podcasts, experimenting in chemistry and learning about statistics and probability.

Through difficult times in lockdown grades have been competing against each other in the “Lockdown Olympic”. Each student has been given a criteria sheet of good deeds and chores to do around the house which earns them points for the grade. It was fantastic to see students chipping in around the house in lockdown. Well done to Miss Ebbott’s grade who won the lockdown Olympics.

In literacy students have been listening to the podcast Camp Dino a place where you don’t dig for fake fossils or sit through boring classes, you raise your own dinosaur from an egg. Students have been joining Bo and his friends on an unforgettable adventure into the world of dinosaurs. We have also been working on creating their own podcast and are in the final phases of producing them.

In numeracy we have been learning the skills to find a probability of an event and predict the expected outcome by the amount of events that occur using a mathematical formula. Students have also been learning about graphs, data sets and statistics, they have been making their own graph from a collection of data that has been surveyed throughout the classes.

Our science lessons have been created for a hands on fun experience to bring some enjoyment at home. Students have been learning about chemistry over the past few weeks. We looked at viscosity and how viscous house hold liquids are. We learned that heating and cooling causes the expansion and contraction of matter. In front of a large online audience of over 100 people the seniors showed the school how the reaction between vinegar and baking soda creates the gas called carbon dioxide.

Senior School 100 Word Writing Challenge - Winners

The task on 23 July 2021 was to continue this DESCRIPTION of the predator. We had a picture as a prompt also.

A low growl could be heard; a rumble that came from deep within the predator like a distant storm approaching. With milky grey eyes like miniature moons, the cat began to prowl stealthily out of the tall grass…

Congratulations to these winners:
As this beast squeezed around the pot plants and under the garden chairs, it tensed its muscles ready to pounce, thump! The little cat was too slow, it missed. His milky grey eyes soon caught something rummaging through the branches of a tree, and there it was. Another chance. But this one was faster than the other one. Cautiously this snowy ball of fur begins to move. It slowly creeps through the long grass ready to catch its prey. The feline increases it’s pace ready to launch at its prey… CHOMP! no more butterflies fluttering around in that garden for now.
Eva 6E

The large predator emerged out of the tall grass in a flash and pounced at its prey, but the prey got away. So, it started it journey on hunting all over. it was getting late so the Predator was heading back to its herd, suddenly the Predator came across a small deer. So, it leant down and the dear could hear a low growl beneath the surface of the towering grass. His milky grey eyes were glistening through the glass like small stars. The deer was suspicious and got closer. POUNCE the Predator made its move and finally caught its prey.

“Max, hide!” screamed Sam. “Mum, what’s happening?” exclaimed Max. “It doesn’t matter, just do what I say!” Mum shouted back. Mum and son both bolted to a nearby cave. They rolled massive boulders to block the cave. They heard a whimpering noise coming from inside the cave. The mum pulled a box matches and a lantern out of her backpack. She lit the lantern and put it down and the cave lit up. She saw an albino fox laying there with a pup behind her. “Mum, look its an albino fox pup!” “Approach slowly,” said Sam. “Why?” said Max. “The pup is scared because the mum has unfortunately passed away,” They grabbed the pup and made the cave their home.

The Hunt
Stepping slowly through the tall grass, it stopped. The prey was near, the prey was as suspicious as a detective. The cats’ teeth were as sharp as swords, the cat laid down for a low profile. The prey was still on edge not knowing how many there were. The cat got ready to leap, 3…2…1…LEAP! The prey was down, and the cat got food for their family, but the cat still must make it home safely. It cautiously walked in the direction of home when it heard a move of leaves. It then looked around to see a whole pack of wolves…and made the cave their home.

The Leopard wanted to stay quiet and low to the ground as his prey was in front of him walking closer to him. The Leopard was ready to strike at the small warthog when all of a sudden more animals started coming towards him ready to fight! The monkeys and warthogs were trying to bite the leopard but the leopard was charging at them at full speed. The monkeys started playing tricks on him like climbing the trees and swinging around him while the leopard tried to find a way to get to them. Suddenly a branch snapped! The monkey froze in fear and fell towards the very angry leopard. TO BE CONTINUED...

'The Unseen'
On Friday 30 July 2021 we had this prompt called ‘The Unseen’.
We had this story starter:

Have you ever wondered what stars are for? Have you ever wondered why the wind blows?

It’s all for them.

When the world sleeps, they awaken. When we close our eyes, they open theirs. All around us, ever present yet unseen, they exist. Their home is the stars. Earth is their playground. This is their story…

Congratulations to these winners:
As the wind tussled and blew around their sail, they threw their rods into the clouds, snatching up stars and dreams, the souls flew past them, they didn’t mind the souls, although catching one would be a treasure. They reeled their rods up and flicked them at the souls flying past, SNATCH! They reeled it in, calm and cautious, Quick! In the cage! One of them gestured. They bumped across the cloudy sea, birds flew past them, they went back to fishing not minding their visitors, the birds landing on the veil of the boat calm and slow.
Shayla – 6E

Silently sailing through the void of space, they watch us, they watch us all. When bright stars show themselves you may see them, a tiny silhouette in front of the moon. The purpose of them is unknown and yet every night they return to watch over us. The people of the village stare silently, confused and mesmerized as a tiny hook travels over the earth. For a split second it seemed like time had stopped as the hook raised back up to the moon. However, next midnight when all the townspeople were waiting for them they did not return.
Daniel & Koji - 6L

Deep in the galactic system further away than any human has ever travelled, life forms thrive. Beyond the milky way and our solar system, the creatures who control the universe live. The mysterious tribes roam in floating boats across the stars making new constellations as they go. The boats, built of old parts from space ships that have fallen off were their homes. They floated around and got a full view of the stars every time they open their eyes. This life seems peaceful but a monster of a hole lurks beneath them waiting to strike. The black hole is waiting.
Matilda – 6E

All about stars,
As we lay below the shining stars,
Above we spotted mars.
All our sadness went away, everything in colours and nothing grey.
Nothing could disturb our peacefulness,
We had so much happiness.
The moon was very bright,
And the stars were shining white.
The sky was black,
While we both lay on our back.
The animals were sleeping,
The horses were relaxing instead of leaping.
We started to get tired,
The beautiful scene made us aspired.
The sun started to rise,
It shined in our eyes.
Together we left,
By the stars and the sky we were impressed.
THE END
