Foundation News

Can you believe that we are now half way through Prep?! Wow where did that time go?!?!

The Preps have had a wonderful term with many fun things that have taken place. Just last week we visited the Library which was an awesome experience! The Preps walked to Chelsea Library and once there we listened to some stories, sang some songs then got to explore the selection of books ourselves! It was a wonderful day and we were very grateful for the staff at Chelsea Library for taking their time to see us.

In literacy over the past couple of weeks we have been look at the sounds ‘-ng’ and ‘-nk’ as well ‘wh’ and ‘ck’. The preps have been absolutely smashing it and it is wonderful to watch how they are progressing. We’ve also been looking at adjectives recently and using these in our writing to make our sentences more detailed and interesting.

In maths we have been focusing on measurement as well as capacity and volume. Last week we enjoyed measuring items as well as each other with different informal measurement tools. For capacity and volume, we explored the meaning behind ‘full, half full and empty’. We also conducted our very own science experiment where we made lava lamps!

Junior School News

We are halfway through the school year already. This time has flown! We are so proud of the students and all they have achieved during this semester at school

In mathematics we have been having a lot of fun in the classroom working on developing our understanding of multiplication and division. The students have used a range of manipulatives to work through these concepts and have done a brilliant job. We have also been looking at measurement through informal units and uniform units, we have measured things in the classroom with our pencil and outside with our feet.

In literacy we have been learning how to conduct research, then expanding our notes into full sentences for animal information reports. We have also been reviewing the structure of a recount and have been recounting our grandparents. The year one students were lucky to hold a grandparent’s afternoon where their grandparents came in and they were able to ask them questions about their life.

We hope you all have a safe and happy break and we will see you all after the holidays.

Thank you

The Year 1 and 2 Team

Middle School News

At only 9 weeks in length, Term 2 has felt much longer.  It has been an incredibly busy term with many opportunities for students to enrich their learning across all curriculum areas both in class and on our excursions to the Melbourne Museum and the Chelsea library.  Athletics Day was a further hit with students with so much excitement in the air, despite the early finish due to the wet weather.  Throughout the term, students have displayed incredible resilience as they powered through all their assessments along with learning new content.  As a middle school team, we couldn’t be any prouder of the efforts of our year 3 and 4 students!

Literacy learning has been tailored to build on students’ knowledge of sentence structure, leading into writing more detailed and complex sentences using conjunctions.  Students were afforded the opportunity to be creative through poetry with Haiku and Cinquain poems.  Additionally, the structure of information reports was introduced with students learning about several different animals.  The term is coming to an end as students are now researching an animal of their choice in preparation to present their findings to the class.

Numeracy has had a central focus on multiplicative thinking in term 2.  This has involved students visually representing and understanding multiplication using arrays and pictures, then with a shift towards further conceptual understanding as vertical multiplication and short division algorithms were used.  We have been practising our times tables daily to build students’ fluency to help them solve multiplication problems efficiently.  Measurement has been interleaved with students’ learning this term, with capacity being a current focus.  Students were able to use their multiplicative thinking to describe and double-check the volume of containers using sand as the measuring medium.

Overall, the last 8 weeks have been demanding of students, and they have met the challenge beautifully.  They have displayed our Chelsea Primary School values wonderfully both in the classroom, in the yard, and in the wider community as we ventured out on excursions.  We hope everyone has a well-deserved and enjoyable break over the holidays.

Stay safe and healthy, and we’ll see you at the beginning of term 3!

Senior School News

Hello Team Senior families,

The last month of this term has definitely been jam-packed for our awesome Senior School students.

Literacy
We finished our novel study on Black Cockatoo and what a wonderful end to the book it was. Each classroom has had some awesome, in depth discussions surrounding the themes of the novel.

The visit to the Chelsea Library was very beneficial. It allowed students to see the wide variety of books and resources readily available to them.

Grade 5s were lucky enough to partake in a one-hour poetry workshop with Maxine Beneba Clarke. This was fabulous to watch and be a part of. Our students created some awesome acrostic poems and were practicing their onomatopoeia (the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named).

Next term, we look forward to starting our new novel study, Once. This story is set during World War II and explores the experience of Felix, a 10 year old boy through this time.

The fabulous Mr Munday has organized the Senior School to attend the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. This will be first day back for the Grade 6s and end of week 3 for the Grade 5s. Please ensure you have your permission forms handed in to your class teacher as soon as possible.

Mathematics
The senior school has thrived under the new planning regime which includes explicit teaching at the beginning of the week followed by authentic worked examples, problem solving and maths games. We have been really impressed by how well the children have approached their numeracy.

The topics we have covered this term include;

  • Fractions and Decimals
  • Financial and Money Mathematics
  • Time / Timetables
  • Geometry
  • Data and statistics

Term 2 was an assessing term, the senior school students showed great growth and should be very proud of their efforts. They also displayed wonderful resilience as there was a lot of maths assessments towards the end of the term and this would have taken a toll on their already very busy minds. Well done!

Humanities
We have finished off our history unit with some fantastic presentations about significant events/persons from 1800 colonial Australia. It has been awesome to see all the hard work and effort that has been put into these presentations.

Next term, Geography will be our humanities inquiry focus, concentrating on the factors that shape places and the diversity we see across the globe.

This will be a very engaging topic for our students and will link of lot of their own life experiences to the classroom.

Sports
Winter Interschool Sport has been a huge success. The students have participated and played in their respective sports and have loved the friendly competition they have come up against. This has given them a good opportunity to get to know some of the other senior school students in the surrounding areas.

The Winter Lightning Premiership was a lot of fun. All teams demonstrated wonderful sportsperson-ship and our Chelsea Values to a high standard.

For Interschool sport next term, the sport options remain the same and include Aussie Football Rules, Netball, Soccer and T-ball. Your child is more than welcome to choose a different sport or they can remain where they are. The choice is up to them.

Production
Term three will see CPS practice and perform another awesome school production. Please stay tuned for more information on this. Going based off previous years, each class will need parent volunteers. If this sounds like something you are interested in, please get in touch with your child’s classroom teacher at the start of the term.

Any questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us 😊

Have a safe and fun filled holiday.

Ms Ebbott, Mr Munday, Mrs Beckett, Ms Smith and Miss A

ISIC

Last Tuesday the ISIC ambassadors went to Namatjira Reserve. We first learned about the litter traps and how they collect the rubbish from the water reserve.

There was a small crane that lifted the litter traps and we went up close to see all the rubbish such as: plastic bottles, tons on leaves and coffee cups which are banned in our area.

We did water testing after the litter traps. we had a big container, spoons, ice trays and a net for the lake where we scooped the lakes and found two Mosquito fish and a midge larvae worm. Mosquito fish were released into Australia to help control the mosquito population, but the Mosquito fish prefer eating tadpoles.

Then we went on to PH testing we tested turbidity, phosphorus and electrical conductivity it was very interesting and then we went to pick up rubbish around the reserve.

Then we were at the Mordialloc pier, and we walked along governor road floating catchments.

Thank you

ISIC Ambassadors

Chelsea Primary’s Composting journey

As of term three every classroom in Chelsea Primary will have their very own compost caddy that Kingston council has generously donated. With their donation we will be officially starting our composting journey as an environment loving school.

What goes into a Compost caddy?

To make sure every compost is used correctly we feel it is important to inform everyone what are the correct things that can be put into said compost. The list includes food scraps, eggshells, veggie scraps and apple cores.

How to start a compost

Making sure our composting can begin functioning, we need to collect the correct items. Such as: Browns (newspaper), Air, water and greens.

We look forward to introducing our new compost caddies to each classroom and seeing every student and teacher use them. Thank you for your time and we will see you all in term three.

Sincerely, Chelsea Primary’s Green team leaders.

Community News

Stay well this winter

Symptoms of influenza (flu) can hit very quickly and may last several weeks. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting the flu. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended from mid-April each year and is free under the National Immunisation Program for those at higher risk of complications from the flu.

Keeping our school community well
Parents, carers and students are encouraged to practice prevention measures, including:

· washing and sanitising hands regularly

· avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands

· covering nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing · staying home if unwell and consulting a general practitioner (GP) or Nurse-on-call as required

· staying up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Flu vaccinations
Flu vaccinations can be booked through GPs and pharmacies, many of which can also provide COVID-19 vaccinations. Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over.

Some people are more at risk of complications from flu and are eligible for free vaccination as part of the National Immunisation Program.

COVID-19 booster
The 2023 COVID-19 booster dose is available for everyone aged 18 and above.

Getting your booster dose remains the best way to prevent severe illness or hospitalisation, especially in people aged over 65 and those at higher risk of severe illness.

You can have your booster dose 6 months after your last dose or COVID infection.

Children aged between 5 and 17 years who are at risk of severe illness can also receive a 2023 booster dose. You can get your next dose at your local pharmacy or GP. To find one near you, refer to the vaccine clinic finder.
