STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global world. At CPS we offer STEM as one of our specialist subjects.
Students practise ‘Design Thinking’ by assessing problems, ideating, prototyping and testing their 3D design models to improve their problem-solving skills.
In the ‘Design Thinking’ process students design their best ideas using 3D printing software called Makers Empire and test by 3D printing. Then students self-evaluate their design and assess what worked well and what needs to be improved. Students present their ideas to their peers to discuss for further improvement or feedback.
Each project is linked to everyday-life problem-solving skills. We have a whole school project called ‘Hat Tag’. We have discussed the topic of losing hats at school - because they all look the same! All students throughout the school will create their own 3D printed hat tag in Term 3. When spring comes in Term 4, we will all have different hat tags and hopefully, we will never lose our hats again!
Also each grade will focus on different 3D digital printing topics including:
Grade 1/2 – Mazes
Grade 3/4 – Bubble Wand
Grade 5/6 – Symbol of Australia (We will be sending them to our Korean sister school for a present)
