Principal's report

End of Term Message from the Principal

As we come to the end of another exciting term, I would like to take a moment to reflect on all the fantastic events and achievements that have taken place at our school over the past months. It has truly been a term filled with memorable activities and wonderful community engagement.

Our School Production was a huge success, showcasing the incredible talents of our students and the dedication of our staff and volunteers. The smiles and enthusiasm on the faces of our performers were a testament to their hard work and creativity.

Book Week was a special highlight, with students and staff embracing the theme and coming together to celebrate a love for reading. It was fantastic to see the joy in our students as they explored new stories and characters.

The Mini Olympics brought out the competitive spirit in our younger students, with everyone giving their best and showing great sportsmanship. It was a day of fun and learning, with a focus on staying active and working together.

We also had a heartwarming Father’s Day Breakfast, where we welcomed fathers, grandfathers, and significant male figures to share a morning of connection with the children. It's always wonderful to see the bonds that are nurtured through these moments.

R U OK? Day was an important time to focus on mental health and the wellbeing of our students and staff. As a community, we continue to foster an environment where everyone feels safe and supported to reach out when they need help.

Our grade 3-6 students shone at the District Athletics, with many students achieving personal bests and representing Chelsea Primary with pride.

Science Week also allowed our students to dive deep into the wonders of science, experimenting, exploring, and developing their curiosity for the world around them. The enthusiasm in the classrooms during this week was infectious!

Of course, none of these events would be possible without the ongoing commitment to our core practices of  explicit teaching. Through all of the excitement and extracurricular activities, our teachers have continued to maintain high standards of instruction, ensuring our students are receiving the best possible education. This term’s progress reflects the consistency and dedication to our evidence-based teaching model, and we are incredibly proud of the outcomes we are seeing across all year levels.

I’d like to extend my thanks to our entire community—staff, students, parents, and volunteers—who have made this term so successful. We look forward to an equally exciting and productive term ahead, filled with learning, growth, and more wonderful events.

Wishing you all a safe and restful break.

Warm regards,

Taylor Irish
Principal, Chelsea Primary School

Foundation News

Dear Foundation Parents,

As Term 3 wraps up, we are thrilled to share some exciting updates from our classrooms!

Phonics Adventures
Our Phonics sessions have been buzzing with enthusiasm this term! In our 'Spicy Friday' sessions, students have been exploring phonemes beyond the standard Prep scope and sequence. This extra challenge has been a fantastic way to extend their learning and enthusiasm for phonics, which they are eagerly applying to their reading and writing activities.

English Explorations
In English, we’ve been diving into a series of non-fiction decodable readers, allowing students to test and expand their vocabulary knowledge and comprehension strategies. This exploration not only enhances their reading skills but also helps them understand more about the world around them. We’ve continued to focus on sentence structure, encouraging students to use conjunctions such as “because” and “but” to create more detailed and informative sentences.

Math Whizzes
Our Maths sessions have been all about strategies for adding numbers. We’ve tackled place value to solve double-digit equations, used our “friends of ten” knowledge for long addition, and even explored fractions like halves and quarters. Skip counting by 2s and 5s is becoming second nature, and students are getting faster at quick addition and number facts, including doubles and adding from 10 to make teen numbers.

Integration Insights
In Integration, students have been delving into our family and community history, comparing the past and the present. This exploration has been both engaging and enlightening, as the children have enjoyed seeing what life was like in the ‘olden days.’

School Production Success
No Term 3 would be complete without a bit of performance flair! Our Foundation students wowed us all with their show-stopping performance at the School Production. Dressed in their flower power and peace-loving attire, they delivered a memorable rendition of "Everyday People." A huge thank you to all the parents for their support in making the night such a success.

We look forward to continuing this exciting journey with the preppies in Term 4 and hope you all have a wonderful break! Here’s to more learning and fun in the coming months!

Warm regards,

Maddie, Marie and Sam

Junior School News

Year 1 and 2 News

What a huge Term 3 we have had in the Junior School! Our big focus this term has been the production and all our students worked so hard to perfect their dance routines with the brilliant direction of Mr Rundell. Many thanks must also go to all those parents who assisted with costumes, props and make up to ensure the production was the huge success that it was. We hope you all enjoyed the show.

We also celebrated R U OK? Day by wearing a touch of yellow and engaging in a special assembly and activities to model how to support our friends when they need help. The students took this very seriously and were able to model situations where they could support their friends.

Also, this term we have introduced the Friendology program which empowers students with friendship skills at school including how to be a good friend, making new friends and friendship break ups.

Finally, we are looking forward to the grand finale of Term 3 – Footy Colours Day as a precursor to our long awaited holidays!

Middle School News

Dear Year 3 and 4 families,

As Term 3 draws to a close, we reflect on the impressive progress and achievements of our students over the past several weeks. It has been a busy, productive term, and we’re pleased to share some key highlights from the classroom and beyond.

Our exploration of Kensuke’s Kingdom has come to an exciting conclusion. Students not only engaged deeply with the text but also applied their creativity by developing movie trailers for the upcoming film release. This activity fostered a strong connection between the themes of the novel and visual storytelling, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding in an innovative way.

In Mathematics, we completed our units on measurement and time, with students gaining confidence in reading clocks, calculating durations, and understanding various units of measure. We have now transitioned to fractions, where students are learning to divide whole numbers into equal parts, compare fractions, and recognise their everyday applications. This foundational concept is critical to future success in mathematics, and students are making great strides.

A major highlight this term was, of course, the school production. The Year 3 and 4 students put on a show to remember, demonstrating both talent and hard work. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the parent volunteers who supported us throughout, from costume provision to backstage assistance. Without your contributions, such a polished performance would not have been possible.

As we near the final day of Term 3, we look forward to celebrating with Football Colour Day this Friday. Students are invited to wear their team colours with pride as we wrap up the term in a spirit of camaraderie and fun. This is always a highly anticipated event, and we look forward to seeing the array of colours on display.

Camp Preparations

Looking ahead to next term, students have submitted their camp cabin wish lists, and the teachers are now in the process of arranging cabin groups. Our priority is to ensure that all students are placed in cabins that are safe, supportive, and conducive to positive relationships, making the camp experience enjoyable for everyone.

As we approach the holiday break, we would like to wish all families a restful and enjoyable time away. We hope students return in Term 4 refreshed and ready to take on the final term. We look forward to hearing about their holiday adventures upon their return.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support throughout the term. We wish you all a wonderful holiday break.

Senior School News

What a fun filled and busy term we have had!!

We are so proud of all the senior students for consistently displaying the Chelsea Primary School Values to a high standard throughout the term. Your devotion and commitment to these have not gone unnoticed, and it’s wonderful to see the positive impact these values have on our school community.

English:

This term, our English curriculum has been enriched with a exciting outcomes from our recent novel study of "Holes" by Louis Sachar. This journey through the book has not only been an educational adventure but also a fantastic opportunity for our students to grow in their reading skills. Our study of "Holes" has significantly enhanced student fluency and confidence in reading as students were given multiple opportunity to read aloud in front of the class. A major focus of our study was on figurative language. Students delved into metaphors, similes, hyperboles, idioms and more. This allowed a deeper understanding of how these literary devices enhance storytelling. To further deepen their engagement, students watched the film adaptation of "Holes." Comparing the book to its movie version allowed students to see how different mediums can interpret and present the same story. We are so proud of the progress our students have made. Their improved reading fluency, enhanced understanding of figurative language, and writing are commendable achievements.

Maths:

In Maths, we are continuing to work on new explicit teaching approaches to enhance understanding and engagement. The use of familiar slides throughout each lesson has allowed for a cohesive and consistent learning experience. The increase in teacher demonstrations have provided students with clear, step-by-step guidance on various mathematical concepts. These methods have proven effective, and we are pleased with the students' positive responses and improved comprehension.

Production:

A highlight of the term was our school production of ‘The Land of Zo’.

The show was an incredible success, and we couldn't have achieved this without the collective effort of our dedicated teachers, fantastic and courageous students and wonderful family supporters. From start to finish, the show was a testament to the hard work and creativity that went into every aspect of the performance. A huge shoutout to our costume designer Sue Bray and families for ensuring all our students looked the part. The grade six costumes were nothing short of spectacular, adding depth and character to each role. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the vibrant and authentic designs.

Interschool Sport:

Our weekly sport mornings have been great, providing a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in physical activity while developing important life skills. ISS has been all about fostering teamwork. Whether on the soccer field, the netball court, football field or Teeball field, students have been working together, learning to support and motivate one another. This collaborative spirit is helping to build stronger, more cohesive teams and friendships. Beyond just playing sports, the senior school students are stepping into leadership roles, taking charge of drills, organising games, and guiding their peers.

One of the best aspects of ISS is the chance for students to socialise with their peers from surrounding schools. It’s been wonderful to see new friendships forming and students connecting with others who share their interests and enthusiasm for sports.

As we move into Term four, students will have the opportunity to choose from the same sports offered in Term 1. These include Basketball, Volleyball, Kickball, and Cricket. Please note that Grade six students do get priority choosing as it is their final term of ISS.

We look forward to seeing our students continue to develop their skills and enjoy these sporting activities.

Important Dates:

The following events are coming up for the seniors as we progress into our final term of the year.

  • 7th October: First day of term four
  • 7th October and 14th October: Lacrosse Clinics
  • 9th, 16th and 23rd October: Living and Growing Program
  • 25th October: Twilight on the turf

As we bring term three to a close, it is a bittersweet moment that we say goodbye (for now) to our beloved Mrs Jakon as she embarks on her new journey of becoming a mother. We wish The Jakon’s the best of luck for this adventure and cannot wait to meet Baby Jakon sometime in Term four. As a result of this, we are also proud to announce that Ms Cath Macaskill will be taking over 6J for the remainder of the year. Cath is very experienced and a well-known face within the community. We can’t wait to have Cath officially join our team.

Another individual departing us is Charlie Brookes from 5A. Charlie and the Brookes family have been at CPS for many years. It is going to be sad to see him leave 5A and the school community however we wish him and his family all the best, as they too embark on a new journey.

We would like to thank all our families for your ongoing support and guidance. Our jobs wouldn’t be possible without this assistance. Have a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing everyone in Term Four!

Team Senior,

Mrs Jakon, Mr Munday and Miss A

STEM news

Students have made a wonderful start to STEM this semester. Their curiosity and enthusiasm is always impressive.

Grade One and Two

The Grade Ones and Twos started the semester with a Physical Science unit where they developed their science inquiry skills by participating in guided investigations. These inquiries focused on understanding push or pull forces, including gravity and what makes objects move and change direction. During this unit students made car ramps, car launchers and boats as they explored the impact of forces.

In preparation for coding, students have finished the term learning about sequences and how they can be used to solve problems or reach a goal. Grade One students were introduced to the LEGO Spike mini-figures and have begun to familiarise themselves with the equipment they will be coding next term. Grade Two students have commenced the “Amazing Amusement Park” program where they are following a sequence and working collaboratively on a range of building projects.

Grade Three

Grade Three students have also focused on Physical Science this term. They investigated the effect of push or pull forces, including the impact of friction, gravity and magnets. Students explored the way light travels, reflects off different surfaces and creates shadows, by making a light maze and a shadow show. Students investigated heat transfer and energy during a range of investigations, including changes in corn kernels due to heat and generated static electricity to make paper towel puppets dance.

SCIENCE WEEK 2024

We recently celebrated National Science Week at CPS with the theme of 'Species Survival: More than just Sustainability'. Students participated in a range of classroom activities focusing on sustainability and the senior school had the opportunity to investigate zebra fish with an incursion run by Monash University.

A big thank you to our two wonderful parent guest speakers – Lauren Richardson (Urban Planning) and Kristy Ficken (Zoologist), who shared their valuable knowledge and time to talk to students about protecting our precious Australian wildlife. Thank you!

iSea iCare:

Our iSea iCare ambassadors – Cara, Calvin, Matilda and Tommy participated in a coastal workshop at Chelsea Beach this term where they spent time removing weeds in the dunes and replacing them with a range of native plants. They investigated some of the things we shouldn’t find in the sand, but sadly do, and learnt about the impact of rubbish in our marine environments and what we can do to help. Our ambassadors have made CPS proud with their enthusiasm, commitment and behaviour.

John Monash Science School:

Selected students participated this semester in 'Little Scientists, Big Science' at John Monash Science School (JMSS) and have had a wonderful time exploring fish, frogs and pond water as part of their biology lesson. They have also completed some awesome experiments as they learn more about the world of chemistry – including dancing oobleck!

STEM Extension:

A group of Grade Six students have been learning all about Biomimicry. Taking inspiration from natural selection and adaptation adopted by nature over millions of years and translating this expertise to human engineering. Students ideas to solve problems and create new products have been beyond impressive and we look forward to sharing more with you later in the year.
