Principal's Message

Dear Chelsea Primary School Families,

As we reach the end of Term 2, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a rich, busy, and joyful term of learning, connection, and community here at Chelsea Primary School.

From the moment students returned in late April, there has been a buzz of energy across the school. We’ve seen our students immerse themselves in a diverse range of experiences—from Education Week’s Celebration, where classrooms came alive with rich stories, art, and shared learning, to the year 5/6 Winter Lightning Premierships and Athletics Days, where our students displayed fantastic teamwork and determination. Our PE sports clinics added something new and exciting to the mix, and students enthusiastically embraced the challenge.

A standout highlight of the term was the Grade 5/6 Camp to Campaspe Downs, where our senior students embraced adventure, independence, and plenty of outdoor challenges. The camp staff—who’ve worked with countless schools across the UK and Australia—told us that our Chelsea group was one of the best they’ve ever had. That speaks volumes about the maturity, kindness, and leadership our students showed across the week. Huge thanks to Miss A for her incredible organisation and coordination in making this such a memorable experience.

This term also saw us welcome visitors from across Victoria—and even New Zealand—who came to observe our explicit teaching model in action. It was a proud moment for us to showcase the high-impact instructional practices that are embedded across our school, and the feedback from visitors was a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come as a school community.

Our Student Leaders have continued to shine—representing Chelsea with pride and confidence at the ANZAC Day Commemoration Service, actively participating in the Kingston Junior Mayor Program, and supporting peers during whole-school events. Their dedication and growing voice in school life are a credit to their character and to the leadership culture we foster at Chelsea.

We also saw our values of respect, responsibility, resilience and relationships come to life in activities like buddy reading with Chelsea Kinder and visits to Chelsea Manor Care Community, where our students demonstrated empathy and community spirit beyond the classroom.

And to top it all off—what better way to end the term than with Chelsea’s Got Talent? This event brings the whole school together in the most joyful and inspiring way. From dancing to comedy, singing, and instrumental performances, the talent on display is always incredible. It isn’t just about performing—it is about students having the courage to step on stage, cheering each other on, and creating memories as a community. The atmosphere is always electric, and is the perfect way to close Term 2 on a high.

To all our families—thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement, and trust. Whether it’s helping at events, attending assemblies, cheering from the sidelines, or simply sharing a moment at the gate, your partnership makes a world of difference.

Wishing all our students and families a safe, restful and well-deserved break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 3—with Science Week, Book Week, excursions, and so much more still to come.

Warm regards,
Taylor Irish

My Pet Posters

This term, Grade 1, 2 and 3 students have been learning animal vocabulary in Korean. They created “My Pet” posters, choosing a real or imaginary pet and describing its name, species, and colour using simple Korean sentences.

Students showed great effort practicing their writing and speaking skills. We’re proud of their progress this term and look forward to seeing their continued language growth next year!

Foundation News

Hello Families,

What a joyful and busy term it has been for our little learners! We are so proud of the amazing progress the Preps have made and the enthusiasm they bring to every lesson. It’s such a pleasure to watch them grow and discover new things each day. Here’s a glimpse into some of the wonderful learning experiences they’ve enjoyed this term:

Phonics
This term, our Preps have confidently finished learning all about single consonants and their corresponding sounds. Now, we’ve begun an exciting new chapter by introducing double consonant blends and digraphs, along with some of those tricky spelling rules like -ck and the heroic ‘magic e’. The children have absolutely loved the challenge of diving into the ‘Learning Pit, ’eagerly reading and spelling ‘spicy’ words that stretch their skills. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they tackle these more complex spelling patterns with curiosity and determination.

English
Mondays have become a special time where the Preps share their weekend stories through our routine recount writing lessons. They’ve been writing thoughtful and clear recounts, carefully including WHO they were with, WHAT they did, WHERE they went, and WHEN it happened. We are now gently introducing them to the structure of recount writing by teaching them to use time connectives like first, then, and finally—helping them to put their stories in the right order.
In addition, we have been exploring the wonderful world of adjectives. The students have enjoyed brainstorming and discovering a variety of words to describe nouns, making their writing more interesting. These exciting skills are laying the perfect foundation for our next adventure into narrative writing next term!

Mathematics
Our number skills are really blossoming as we focus on building fluency with our ‘Friends of Ten’ number facts—an essential stepping stone in early maths learning. We’ve also been exploring the concept of place value, helping the children understand that numbers above 10 are made up of tens and ones. This hands-on exploration is boosting their confidence and deepening their understanding of how numbers work.

Integrated Unit: Family and Community History
This term, the students thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of our families and community, with a special focus on the story of our school. They were fascinated by how much has changed over time and loved hearing stories from the past.
Looking ahead to next term, we’re excited to start an Integrated Unit on the magical world of Fairytales. By exploring classic stories, our Preps will learn key story structures and elements, helping them build on their recount and descriptive skills as they begin writing their very own narratives.

Other Highlights
We’ve also had lots of fun with whole-school events such as Athletics Day, where the Preps showed great energy and sportsmanship, and Hot Dog Day, which was a delicious and exciting treat for everyone!

As we look forward to next term, we’re buzzing with excitement for all the learning and fun ahead, especially the much-anticipated 100 Days of Prep celebration—one of the most memorable and joyful milestones of the year!

Junior School News

We’ve had such a wonderful end to term 2. It’s been a great time to connect with students. It’s been lovely getting to meet with the families to discuss all the exciting things we have been doing at school.

Athletics Day was a highlight for everyone and we just managed to escape the rain! The children loved catching the bus, being outside, participating in the events and cheering on their friends. The students especially enjoyed the hurdles. The staff were all so proud of the resilience shown, particularly when getting back up during the hurdles and potato sack race.

In the classrooms the Year Two’s have continued learning about Australia and its rich history and the significance of Uluru. The Year One’s have completed their Egypt Unit. It’s been a fascinating topic and the children are looking forward to their project in the last week of term.

Middle School News

It’s been another vibrant and rewarding term for our Grade 3 and 4 students, full of rich learning experiences and exciting opportunities for growth.

The Grade Threes have thoroughly enjoyed diving into their English unit on the Vikings. Students were especially captivated by Viking Gods and Myths, Viking raids, and the adventurous lives of these legendary seafarers. They’ve also been enthusiastically building their topic vocabulary, using it in information reports and discussions. In Mathematics, the focus has been on multiplication and division, with students working hard to strengthen their understanding through hands-on activities and problem solving.

For our Grade Fours, learning about the First Fleet has sparked curiosity and creativity. Students have particularly enjoyed writing historical narratives and diary entries from the perspectives of convicts and early settlers, bringing the past to life through their writing. In Mathematics, they have also focused on multiplication and division, showing persistence and growth in their problem-solving strategies.

A highlight for both year levels this term was participating in two engaging incursions. During Scott Darlow’s Indigenous Culture session, students deepened their understanding of Aboriginal culture, language, and history. They were inspired by Scott’s music and message of unity, empathy, and making a difference. In our Autism Actually incursion, students developed a greater awareness of Autism through stories and presentations by young adults living on the spectrum. The session encouraged empathy, inclusion, and respect—values we continue to foster across our school community.

Throughout the term, students have also been busy improving their writing through the 100 Word Challenge, using laptops to publish short pieces that showcase their creativity and growing writing skills.

We are incredibly proud of the learning, effort, and positive behaviour shown by all students this term. Their enthusiasm for learning and the way they uphold our school values has been a joy to witness. As we head into the Winter holidays, we wish all families a safe and restful break. We know both grades are already looking forward to their upcoming Camp adventures next semester!

Senior School News

What a fantastic and full term it has been!

As we wrap up Term 2, we’re reflecting on just how busy, exciting, and rewarding these past 11 weeks have been across the senior school. From impressive learning achievements to unforgettable events, our students have shown resilience, creativity, and enthusiasm in every corner of the curriculum.

Literacy

Our Grade 5 students have immersed themselves in their novel study of War Horse, blending narrative and persuasive writing into their daily learning. A special focus on animals in war sparked thoughtful discussions and deepened students' understanding of the many roles animals have played throughout history.

Grade 6 students have been sharpening their persuasive skills through a debating unit, which creatively merged their Asia-focused Inquiry work and contemporary and locally relevant issues. They’ve especially enjoyed learning about the structure of a debate and the responsibilities of each team role – future leaders in the making!

Maths

It’s been a term full of challenge and growth in Mathematics! Both Grade 5 and 6 students tackled a wide range of concepts and have completed several assessments. We are incredibly proud of the resilience and effort shown by every student during these tasks – assessments are never easy, but their positive attitude and dedication to improvement have been inspiring.

Interschool Sport – Winter Lightning Premiership

One of the highlights of the senior school calendar was our Winter Lightning Premiership Day! Huge thanks to Miss Mac for organising such a brilliant day of sport, fun, and teamwork. All teams proudly displayed the Chelsea Primary School values on and off the field. A special shout-out to Miss Dunne, Ms Dwyer, and the Tee-Ball team, who made it all the way to the Grand Final – what a fantastic achievement!

Grade 5 Travel Expo

Our Grade 5s have been busy globe-trotting from the classroom all term long as they researched, designed, and presented their Travel Expo projects – nine weeks in the making! The final showcase was open to the whole school and Grade 5 families, and we were blown away by the creativity and collaboration on display.

Thank you to everyone who visited and supported the event – it was a huge success! Winners from each class will be announced at an assembly early in Term 3.

Wishing all our families a safe and restful break. We look forward to seeing you refreshed and ready for more learning adventures in Term 3!

Warm regards,
The Senior School Team
