News from the Principal and Assistant Principal

WELCOME BACK

We are so happy to welcome everyone back to Term 4!

It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm of students arriving last Monday through our gates to reconnect with friends and teachers. Great joy all around!

As a school we have embraced every challenge we have faced this year - together.  Our thanks and appreciation to everyone in the CPS school community.  It has 'taken a village' to get us to make this happen but we are now focused on ensuring that all our students and families enjoy an exciting Term 4.

Our three priorities for Term 4 are:

  1. Health and Well-being

Our highest priority will be the health and well-being of every child. We will be active in providing opportunities for our students to re-connect with their teachers, friends and peers; work collaboratively with others and apply their voice and agency in school life.

  1. Learning

Many of our children have thrived in the flexibility of remote learning, others have maintained their learning progress, and some have fallen behind, despite the best efforts of all. Our priority will be to support every child that needs a 'catch up' and to continue to progress all students to extend their literacy and numeracy learning.

  1. Transitions

We are planning some exciting experiences to ensure successful transitions for students moving from kindergarten into Prep in 2021, and to support our extraordinary Years 6s moving into Year 7.

TOILETS

Our new designer ‘looks like a hotel’ toilets are open for business! A few tweaks and some painting will be finished off this week.

We are now putting plans in place to revamp and beautify the walkways and play space around this area.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Our Breakfast Club was trialled this week. School Breakfast Club is sponsored

by DET and provides a tasty breakfast for students. Breakfast will be served

in the Senior building Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8.15 - 8.45am.

CLASS PLACEMENT 2021

The school principal has the final responsibility of allocating students to classes and appointing staff.

There are many considerations to be made when establishing new class lists each year.

Next week via Compass we will provide a request form as an opportunity for parents to inform Mr Irish of any ‘special circumstances’ that exist that may be significant in the placement of your child.

As such, this form do not guarantee your child will be placed as requested and decisions will reflect our Class Placement Policy.

It is important to note that the request and supportive reasons should be based on the educational wellbeing of your child and needs to be made yearly.

Personal judgements about teachers or other students will not be taken into consideration.

Please ring 9773 2055 if you would like to discuss your request with either the Principal, Mr Irish or Assistant Principal, Mrs Smith.

PHOTOS

It is with great delight that we let our families know that we have locked in our School Photo Day on Thursday 5th November. Due to current restrictions photos may all need to be taken outdoors, but we will work with the very flexible ‘School Pix’ team to create special memories of 2020 for families. We will update everyone as more details come through!

Foundation News

We have had a wonderful two weeks back at school!  Transitioning back into the classroom, we focused on friendships and connections with our peers, and a Circle Time question was 'how can you be a good friend?' During developmental play we revisited how to play cooperatively with others, and enjoyed time laughing and chatting with our friends.

In Reading we looked at story elements such as setting and sequence of events, and how to identify facts from non-fiction books.  Our writers practised using story starters at the beginning of a narrative to capture the reader's attention.  We reviewed the FLOSS spelling rule, and the preps did a fantastic job sounding out words to blend and identifying words that follow the rule!  In Maths we are learning how to skip count by 10's, and how to identify different coins and their values.  Students had so much fun playing 'shop', reinforcing concepts we had learnt about money.

Prep explored what plants need to grow, and considered what we need to grow, comparing similarities and differences.  Students enjoyed creating nature pictures with materials collected from outside such as sticks, leaves, and flowers, to show what plants need to grow.  In Inquiry this term we are looking at animals and plants that can be found in Australia, and we investigated habitats, matching Australian animals to their environment.

Junior School News

Wow, what an outstanding couple of weeks we have had in the Discovery Centre! The children have worked so hard and have really expanded their understandings, across the curriculum.

The children have been exploring some new and exciting vocabulary in Literacy and after reading some detailed books we have now started using words such as ‘perplexed’ and ‘odour’. In Writing, they have experimented with the use of nouns and adjectives and have created some sizzling sentences. Here are some examples, can you spot the nouns and adjectives?

In Maths, we have investigated the fantastic way that arrays can help us to solve multiplication problems. We have also partitioned numbers in to Hundreds, Tens and Ones to help us to add, subtract, multiply and divide by 10s. We love playing dice and card games to deepen our knowledge further.

See if you can solve some of these problems by using arrays:

5x7=                                  6x6=                                      3x4=

In Integrated Studies we are loving learning about Earth and Space. The children are very excited to share everything they know about stars and planets. How lucky that this week there is an Orionid Meteor Shower. It’s a shame that it is at 5am though! We combined Maths and Science and rulers to measure the distance between planets and were very surprised at how far Neptune is from the Sun!

Middle School News

We have now been back onsite at school for two weeks and it almost feels like we have never been away. The Birralee students have settled back into school routines beautifully. We are reviewing all concepts taught in numeracy and literacy during remote learning. Our Integrated Studies unit has a focus on Earth and Physical Science.

Students have all enjoyed catching up with friends and the whole 3/4 cohort during Thursday afternoon sport. M2 still remain the champions in Capture the Flag. We are looking forward to Footy Colours day this week and Book Week Dress Up Day next week.

Senior School News

We have had a terrific start back to the term in the senior school. We are so proud of how well everyone has settled back in. Everyone has been excited to see each other and there has been a real buzz around the BER building. We have come back and revisited our work on Green and Red Thinking and The Pit, and have been exploring concepts such as resilience, worrying and struggling, and how we can be supported to work through these feelings and emotions.

During literacy, we have been focusing on poetry, and in particular looking at Free Verse Poetry, incorporating figurative language such as alliteration, metaphors, similes and personification. Choosing a topic based on our own interests has seen some terrific poems written.

In numeracy, we have been working with money and budgets by planning virtual birthdays and big day outs. We have explored chance and the language associated with this, and have linked this to our work on fractions, decimals and percentages. We have had several comments from students that MATHS IS FUN! This is music to our ears.

During inquiry we have been working on looking at waste and biodiversity. We conducted an experiment this week which we will monitor over the next seven days. It involved using apples and seeing how difference substances found in the kitchen, such as salt, sugar, soap, vinegar and water can help to preserve food. We are having an online incursion on Monday with the City of Kingston on worms and composting which we are looking forward to.

Our Grade 6’s are on their way with their gorgeous Memory Books and have been active in collecting photos and artefacts for these. Everyone is excited!

It was great to see so many students decked out in their footy gear today for Footy Colours Day. We can’t wait to see everyone in their Book Character costumes next Friday!
