2021 PREP VISIT

Chelsea Primary was abuzz with the arrival of our 2021 preps. Donned in their  ‘Chelsea Primary 2021 Prep’ T-shirts, the students waved their parents good-bye and enthusiastically participated in a welcome session of story-telling, drawing, singing and play activities.

The student will continue to more sessions over the next few weeks. Can’t wait!

Thank you to our Year 5/6 students who assisted with activities throughout the day.

YEAR 6 UPDATE - Netball competition

How wonderful it has been to have our Year 6 students return to full time learning and embrace their leadership at CPS. Last Friday a very ‘competitive’ Students V Teachers netball game entertained us all at lunchtime. Speedy passes, perfect goal shooting and some quick footwork were game highlights.

We are still waiting for the final score which seems to have gone missing!

GRADUATION

Preparations for an exciting (and a little bit different Graduation ceremony is well underway. STOMP dance rehearsals (very cool), the much loved Big Day Out and beautiful memory books are well underway. We look forward to more information to share with our families ………..

NAIDOC WEEK

NAIDOC Week celebrations were held across Australia last week to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. At this time and at other times during the year our students engage in a range of activities to build their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’.  Find out more about the origins and history of NAIDOC Week.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Eligibility for CSEF has been extended to 5 October 2020 for those who have not already claimed CSEF in 2020, and have qualified for a Health Care/Concession Card or temporary foster parents.

As many families are now facing financial difficulty and camps are being delayed, CSEF can now be used for voluntary school charges, books and stationery costs in 2020.

CSEF payments for these students will be made at 50 per cent ($62.50) recognising that opportunities for camps, sports and excursions have been limited in 2020.

CSEF application form is attached, and is due back to the school by 27th November 2020. Please email to chelsea.ps@education.vic.gov.au with your completed application form with a copy of your Health Care/Concession Card.

Foundation News

This week the preps have been busy reviewing the digraphs sh, ch, th, wh, ck, ng and the FLOSS rule. They have continued recalling facts from non-fiction books and identified some of the features of the text such as contents page and headings. The preps have practiced handwriting in their special handwriting books and have begun writing full stories! They have reviewed number sequences to 30 and beyond, explored number patters and shape patterns using different materials. The preps highlight last week was experiencing a virtual incursion for the first time with Reptile Encounters! We learnt all about fur, feathers and scales which fits perfects with our Inquiry unit – Australian Animals. The preps listened carefully as they saw animals such as the barking owl, possum, crocodiles, snakes and more! We also found out about endangered species and their habitats and talked about taking care of our environment.

Middle School News

Week 6 commenced with some Dreaming Stories and learning about the meaning of NAIDOC Week.   Our Term 2 Integrated Studies unit prepared us well and the students were familiar with many of the stories.

We were lucky enough to obtain some NAIDOC Week Posters from Woolworths and all students coloured in a small poster using their knowledge of the symbols used in Indigenous Art to complete their colouring in.

End of year assessment commenced in Week 6 and has now been finalised in time for our report-writing day.

The students have worked hard completing these assessments and we have been very pleased with their results.  Given the year we’ve had with remote learning, it has been very gratifying that the students have still recorded healthy growth in both Literacy and Numeracy.

Senior School News

It has been buzzing in the senior school the past couple of weeks. Memory Books, STOMP dances, designing Magazine Covers, as well as thinking ahead to Grade 6 Graduation and Big Day Out, as well as Grade 5 Leadership Speeches – we are BUZZING!

Our focus in literacy has been on poetry and writing Slam Poems. We have listened to examples of these which have really inspired us to not only write our own with a great sense of passion but to present these with passion. Slam poetry is a form of performance poetry that combines the elements of performance, writing, competition, and audience participation. The name ‘slam’ came from how the audience has the power to praise or, sometimes, destroy a poem and from the high-energy performance style of the poets.

Here are a couple of examples of what our students have chosen to write about. The idea is to choose a topic you are passionate about.

War: How did we get here?

By Will – S3

How did we get here?

People dying

Serving their country whose fighting all out of greed

How did we get here?

The dramatic loss of population from a few years of fighting

How did we get here?

The bodies eroding after years in makeshift graves on the battlefield

Not returning to their family

How did we get here?

Soldiers dying, families crying

We need help

People think wars are ended but not yet.

Pollution

By Scarlett – S3

Why?

Why have we done this?

Why have we done this to our planet?

Oil, plastic, rubbish

We are polluting our earth

Why?

Because we are lazy!

We can’t be bothered to stop waste and we don’t know what we are doing to our planet.

Animals are dying

Because of us!

We are throwing plastic bags on the street and turtles are eating them and dying!

So keep trying.

This!

This needs to stop!

We need to do something. We need to do something to stop waste.

All the oil and tin foil going into our sea.

We eat a credit cards worth of plastic every year

And yet we are still not near,

We are not near to stopping waste for good.

So why can’t we stop polluting the earth? Why?

Racism

By Grace – S3

Bang!

A black guy dead

Just because of the colour of his skin

Why would we do this?

Why?

These innocent people harmed because of their skin.

They have done nothing to harm us but yet we are still harming them.

Black women with or without children abused for their skin.

Why?

Why would we do that?

These people are dying because of our actions.

Skin colour means nothing

It is just a colour.

You are scaring these people.

They are scared to leave their house just because of how poorly they are treated.

It is unfair.

During mathematics we have continued with our daily Mental Maths as well as tackling the topics of Location and Transformation and Volume and Capacity. It doesn’t matter how old you are, everyone loves a sandpit! So that’s where we began our learning on capacity and volume. We have then explored units of measure and conversion and will move to volume of shapes next week.

During inquiry we move to investigation the world of Science through experiments where we will Observe, Predict and Explain what we see and notice. This is on top of the work we have done on Waste throughout the term and the changes we can see we need to implement at CPS based on the survey’s we put together and conducted.

Lastly, our amazing students are showing us what else they know, in addition to what we see each day, through a series of assessment tasks. We are well on our way to writing school reports where we have the chance to enjoy reflecting on our fabulous students and what a year it’s been!

Senior School 100 Word Writing Challenge

The task on Friday 7 November was to use these five words in our writing:

CONCRETE FLUFFY SCOOTER RED DANCED They could be used in any order. As a bonus students were also encouraged to put in a simile or a metaphor. It was a tough job deciding on winners this week as everyone’s writing has improved greatly. Well done to everyone who entered and to these winners:

His head hit the concrete, brown fluffy hair now mixed with dark red blood. Scooters surrounded him, no one knew what had happened. His once friendly face now a bloody mess whilst his head was split open and barely able to grasp what was happening around him as his mind danced back and forth from reality wondering if he would live to see the next day. Everything blurred around him, the sky now going grey as he was picked up and brought somewhere. Not knowing where he was going and feeling drained of all energy he possessed, he fell unconscious.

Ajsa – S1

The concrete felt fluffy when I was riding my red scooter home. Everything in my mind blurred and nothing in the world seemed to matter. My scooter rode along while I danced in the breeze, my hair whipping against my skin, all my worries and concerns faded away. I felt like I was invincible. I didn’t even notice the young girl sitting on my door step. “Just one more ride around the block,” I thought, but I knew I could be out there forever. I closed my eyes and thought what tomorrow’s ride would bring.

Maci – S2

This is it. I had danced my way here and there was no turning back. I wiggled my toes on the fluffy red carpet beneath me. I slip on my leotard, then my tutu and lace my shoes. I do one final practice then turned to leave. Slowly but surely I walked out, my fingers brushing against the concrete wall as I went. The stage was set, the scooter was in place and the tree looked so ever real. The curtains lifted and the cameras flashed like a thousand sparingly stars. Its show time.

Tahlia and Quinn – S2

Nick’s feet pounded on the concrete as he leaped over gaps in the crumbled stone. Attack dogs yelped behind him, nipping at his heels. His scooter’s wheels had come off and he had left it next a pet store full of fluffy puppies. The panting dogs in the store window were nothing like the massive Rottweilers chasing him right now. Their slobbering red tongues danced in and out of their mouths as they licked their lips. Nick tripped and the brutes started biting him. The words “game over” flashed on his screen. Now he would have to restart the level!

Declan – S3

Art News

JOY IN THE ARTROOM

In Foundation we discussed the importance of Naidoc Week in Australia and looked at the beautiful illustrations in the book ‘We All Sleep’ by acclaimed mother-and-son-team Sally Morgan and Ezekiel Kwaymullina. The story looked at celebrating the interconnectedness of people and animals. The Foundation students were then asked to draw a colourful array of different Australian Native Animals that were featured in the book. The students did an amazing job with drawing such colourful pictures using sensory paper.
