News from the Principal and Assistant Principal

FAREWELL TO OUR BEAUTIFUL MISS JACQUI.

With very sad hearts we would like to share with our Chelsea Primary Community that our beautiful Miss Jacqui is retiring at the end of term.
Jacqui is the much loved face of Chelsea Primary office; always ready to meet and greet visitors and new families, look after cuts and grazes in the sick bay, provide her special stars for birthdays and generally spread joy around the school.
Over the last 40 years, Jacqui has had a myriad of diverse roles including library technician, integration aide, volunteer and now office manager.
We wish Jacqui all the very best in her retirement and know she will adore spending more time with her family and travelling to her adored ‘second home’ in Bali.
If any families would like to pop in and say farewell to Jacqui, please visit the office in the next few weeks.

PEER MEDIATORS-TRAINING COMPLETE!

Congratulations to our Year 5/6 students who have just completed their Peer Mediation training and what an amazing group of young leaders they are. The Peer Mediation program invites students to take responsibility for their actions by working together to find solutions to conflict. Trained students (mediators) lead the disputants through a structured process. It aims to:
  • increase awareness of how conflict can affect peoples' lives
  • teach students skills such as listening, critical thinking and problem solving
  • empower students by having them take greater responsibility for resolving their own disputes
We look forward to presenting our 2021 Peer Mediators with their badges shortly.

CSEF Financial Assistance - application close on 23rd June 2021

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) applications close on 23rd June 2021

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership.  All are a part of a healthy curriculum.
CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The annual CSEF amount per student is $125 for primary school students.

Please read the information and application form on the Compass notification. You will need to supply a copy of your concession card to the office with your completed application form, either in person or email the school at chelsea.ps@education.vic.gov.au.

If you have any questions, please contact Ledam in the office.

Colour Fun Run update

Just two weeks until our Colour Fun Run!

Currently we have raised $13,000 of our $25,000 target, so please keep supporting us and working towards it.

To everyone who has raised funds - thank you! For anyone that has not yet and still wants to, please do so before time runs out!

To create a page, simply go to www.schoolfundraising.com.au. Your child will be bringing home a letter with more details so please keep an eye out for it. 😊

From the Office

Many of you will already have heard that we have a puppy dog in the office.
Her name is Zera and she is 12 weeks old (born 16th Dec 2020). She is a Black Labrador/Golden Retriever cross.
Zera is from Vision Australia and hopefully one day will be able to help someone with low vision.
It has been quite an exciting ride so far and Zera will be with me for approximately 12-14 months which I am sure will go by in a flash, but I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of this program.
Zera will be coming to work with me everyday so the children will be able to watch her grow.

https://www.visionaustralia.org/get-involved/ways-to-help
The above link takes you to the website for Vision Australia where there are many ways of helping if you are interested. Perhaps you too would like to become a Puppy Carer.
Below is from the Vision Australia website and I do encourage you to take a look and see how much they do.
Vision Australia is a leading national provider of blindness and low vision services in Australia. We work in partnership with Australians who are blind or have low vision to help them achieve the possibilities they choose in life.
We support more than 25,500 people of all ages and life stages, and circumstances. We do this through 35 Vision Australia centres in Victoria, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia; and through outreach programs in the Northern Territory and Tasmania.
We are a not-for-profit organisation and a major participant and partner in the international blindness community.

Foundation News

What’s Been Happening?
We have had an awesome couple of weeks!!
Our Prep BBQ night was incredible with the biggest turn out that we have ever had. So, a huge thankyou to all that attended, it was great to catch up and continue to build a strong culture that supports the students.
We have been having a lot of fun in the classroom focussing on manipulative maths activities. We were extremely lucky to have the opportunity to attend a Mathematics incursion on World Mathematics Day. The presenter used his magic skills to demonstrate how maths is all around us and that maths is fun.
In Phonics we have been focussing on our letter sounds and how we can use this knowledge to decode words in our readers. This has been a hoot. In reading we have been focussing on making personal connections to the text, while identifying tricky words throughout picture story books. We have accompanied this in writing by focussing on sentence structure, including, capital letters, finger spacing and punctuation.
We have continued on with the topic of growth mindsets whilst building the notion of gratitude and kindness. We have been practicing how we can fill up our own buckets with positivity and how we can fill our peer’s buckets. Finally, we have explored places in the world that are important to us. Students are presenting their images and explaining where they were and why this is an important place to them. It has been so wholesome for the students to share these incredible memories.

What’s coming up?
The end of term is fast approaching and there are some key dates to pop into your diaries.
-We belong day is on the 18th of March. This day focusses on building awareness for an environment that is inclusive for all students and members of the community regardless of their cultural or linguistic background.
-School photo day is on the 23rd of March. Get those pearly whites ready and hair slicked, school photo day is just around the corner. For the Preps it is time to have their school time documented. Treasure these photos as they won’t stay this small forever.
-Colour fun run is on the 25th of March. Get you white clothes ready we are ready to get messy with all the colours of the rainbow. We can’t wait to see you there.

Korean News

Korean Lunar New Year (설날 Seol lal)
On Lunar New Year, it was great to see students celebrating Seollal at Chelsea! Students enjoyed learning about ancestral rites and foods that Korean eat after celebrating the Lunar New Year. They also learned how to bow traditionally. Students were also amazed by how young children get pocket money from elders after bowing. During lunchtime, our Chelsea students celebrated the ancestral rites. Students showed their respect and understanding of Korean culture.

Numbers
To celebrate Maths Day for this week, our students learned numbers 1 to 10 in Korean. They sang songs, play games and worked on fun worksheets!

Korean Language
This week, our preps had their first lesson on Korean language. They showed enthusiasm in learning Korean greetings and vowel songs!

Senior School News

Grade 5 & 6 have started the year with a bang and this fortnight has been no different! We’ve been working on maths fluency and revising place value alongside our four operations. In writing, we’re writing, editing, publishing and sharing narratives and learning how to be organised for high school.

Speaking of high school, we had a visit from Mordialloc Secondary College this week where we got to ask lots of questions to year 7 students and even heard from their year 12 school captains. Next week, Patterson River Secondary are visiting so we’ve got lots of questions to ask!

We loved seeing lots of families at our Friday assembly last week and continue to work on speeches for these fortnightly events.

Lastly, there are so many fun things coming up around the corner! Like on Thursday 25th of March at 4pm, we have the Colour Fun Run – more details should be in a notice your child has taken home. Another fun thing we have coming up is the ‘We Belong Day’ which is next week. For this day, we invite all students to wear orange or costumes from their culture.

Senior School 100 Word Writing Challenge - Winners 26th February

On Friday 26 February we used this image of a ‘never ending tunnel’ to inspire our writing. We had this as a starting point and we had to finish it off in 100 words.
The Never Ending Tunnel Motionless, she stood gazing down the never-ending tunnel. The track extended as far as the eye could see, encased by walls of brightest green. The trees that lined the way grew tall, reaching up and over, interlocking their spindly branches like fingers trapping whoever dared to walk this treacherous route. It was like looking down nature’s kaleidoscope. Where did the path lead? She had dreamt of this moment, but in her dream she couldn’t remember what happened next. There was only one way to find out; she bravely took a step forward...

Well done to these creative writers this week who are our winners for this prompt:

The tunnel was looking exceptionally dark in the loneliness of the night. Everything was quite except for the slight rustling of the leaves in the breeze. I peered into the tunnel and it was somehow even darker in there than outside. I felt very nervous that something might jump out at me from the dark hall, even a kitten could scare me at that point. I wanted to run away as far as I could but just couldn’t. I was paralysed with fear. The tunnel looked endless but there was only one way to find out. I took my first into the dark, terrifying cavern.
Daniel V – 6L

I was wandering through the tunnel but then I heard a TOO TOO. I was running for my life and all I heard was crunch. I saw the end but I turned around THE TRAIN WAS RIGHT THERE, so I quickly laid in the middle of the train tracks. I heard the train go right over me. I was frightened for my life at that moment. My mum said “Why are you laying down?” I said there was a train but I thought it was real but it was just a frightening dream. I woke up with a scared look on my face…
Rafae S – 5W

“Hmm?” I mumble. I see flashes of light as my eyes slowly open up in a place I do not know. “Hello?” I call. All I hear is an echo. I get up and start to walk. I’m in a tunnel of some sort. Its over grown, dim and is eerily quiet. I don’t remember anything. I walk faster, then start jogging then I break into a sprint. Beads of sweat trickle down my head as I grow tired. I’ve been running for hours now trying to find a way out, only to be greeted by a dead end “is this a sick joke!?!” I yell desperately. I sit, hopeless…

Senior School 100 Word Writing Challenge - Winners 5th March

On Friday 5th March our prompt involved using the words ‘brown, never, kicked, frightening and balloon’ in our writing. We have to think of a creative way to use these. We had some outstanding entries this week! It was tough to judge. For that reason we have five winners instead of four!

Well done to these brilliant writers:

The party was great!
Balloons flew through the air.
Children kicked balls
Without a care.
A small kid named John
With pants all brown
Pointed at a car and yelled,
“HERE COMES THE CLOWN!”
He laughed and he squealed,
That kid with pants, brown.
For little John had
Never seen a clown.
The children all yelled.
Their day must be brightening!
But what happened next
Was actually frightening.
A smelled wafted out.
Someone cried, “what is that?”.
John wrinkled his nose,
As did the cat.
For it did seem,
With all sad refrain,
That in the clown’s pants
Was a nasty brown stain.
Declan – 6L

My balloon
A huge balloon,
Staring right at me,
I fell in love with it instantly.
It wiggled and it jiggled and it kicked my knee,
I thought it was very frightening!
That big brown balloon I loved it so,
It looked kinda like a baboon,
So I let it go.
It flew away gracefully,
Up in the air,
It curved and swerved,
Like it just didn’t care.
That gorgeous balloon,
It made me cry,
As I watched it fly,
All the way up in the sky.
Big brown balloon,
I’ll never forget you,
Even though,
You looked like poo!
Patti – 5W

The Missing Balloon
Balloons grow like flowers
Although they don’t have powers
I’m talking about one balloon
It’s a frighting,
never ending story
That you’ll listen to in glory
This balloon was brown
It had a frown.
It flew away, really far
And landed on a playground bar.
A child found it
And kicked it around until the balloon wasn’t round
The child took the balloon home
And attached it to a gnome
The kid forgot about the balloon
So the balloons frown
And its face changed to a clown
The child came outside
Floating in the air and turned upside
The child was never to be seen again
Jana – 5P

Emma brushed her brown locks of hair as she waited for her bus to arrive. It was pouring down with rain but she didn’t have an umbrella… she let out a huff while the clouds thundered… she was bored out of her mind and worn out. After a day of work she desperately wanted to have a warm bath and get in bed. she was lost in thought, until a warmly coloured balloon floated her way. It contrasted from the grey tones of her surroundings. She grabbed onto the string of the balloon before another hurl of thunder frightened her, out of a slip of the hand she let go of it. She furrowed her brows and sighed, although her bus was here. she stepped up, kicking a brown paper bag, before hopping into the bus.
Alex – 6L

Balloons
Red balloons,
Orange balloons,
Many different coloured balloons,
Find them at the fair,
Find them under the stairs,
Find them in your underwear,
Balloons can be brown,
They can be ugly and frightening,
But a balloon has never kicked someone,
So, don’t worry like you do when there
Is lightening,
Balloons are bouncy,
Balloons are fun,
But don’t pop them,
Otherwise the fun will be done,
But if your balloon pops,
Don’t be sad and grey,
You can blow up another one,
And continue the day,
Balloons are really great,
We all love balloons,
Well I love balloons,
Do you?
