COLOUR RUN
Chase the Cheetah has arrived at CPS! A magnificent trophy to acknowledge an amazing effort by our community and organisers.
Prizes will be ready for collection after school next week 3.30-4pm–Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday under the gazebo. From Thursday, prizes will be sent home with students.
This is to ensure they are kept safe and do not get mislaid throughout the day.
Thank you once again to everyone for their incredible support of this ‘fabulous fun-filled fundraiser’.
OUR INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND BUILD HAS BEGUN
Early Monday morning the fences and site sheds were erected to signal the start of our long awaited Inclusive Playground build. The diggers moved in yesterday to the delight of students (but perhaps not Mr. Irish who seemed to have worn his headphones all day) and ripped up the asphalt up ready to form the base for construction. Keep your eyes open for the update photos. The plan is to have completion by the end of term!
Year one students were asked what the playground may look like. Some wonderful suggestions including flying fox, jumping castle, lolly trees, swimming pool, monkey bars, a balcony, a petting zoo and even sky diving! Hopefully we can incorporate some of these suggestions (perhaps not the sky diving).
NAPLAN COMPLETED
Congratulations to staff who have supported our assessments this week. Our Year 3 and 5 students worked positively over the three days.
Results will be available to schools and families later in Term 3.

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) applications close on 23rd June 2021
School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are a part of a healthy curriculum.
CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.
If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.
The annual CSEF amount per student is $125 for primary school students.
Please read the information and application form on the Compass notification. You will need to supply a copy of your concession card to the office with your completed application form, either in person or email the school at chelsea.ps@education.vic.gov.au.
If you have any questions, please contact Ledam in the office.

What’s Been Happening?
We have had an awesome couple of weeks settling into the term!
The Mother’s and special friends’ breakfast was amazing. It was great to see so many people celebrating the wonderful women in their life and building the strong culture Chelsea has to support the students. We hope you all had a lovely day.
In mathematics we have been having a lot of fun in the classroom focussing on friends of ten, groups of ten and measurement. The students have thoroughly enjoyed working together to build tall towers and long playdough snakes.
In Phonics we have been focussing on identifying the short vowel sounds and diagraphs. The students have grasped this nicely and are able to use this knowledge to decode words in our readers. In reading we have been focussing on making connections, who, what, where and why questions whilst promoting reading for enjoyment. We have accompanied this in writing by focussing on fragments, sentences, characters, settings and identifying the problem in the story.
In inquiry we have been focussing on family histories. Identifying where in the world our family came from, where our name has come from and building awareness of where our peers are from. We have also been focussing on recognising our personal strengths and how we can build up and promote our peers’ strengths.
What’s coming up?
We have a few important things coming up in the next few weeks.
Athletics carnival is next Friday the 21st of May. It is going to be an amazing day filled with fun activities for all students. Please make sure to pack your child’s lunch, drink bottle and a raincoat just in case it starts to rain. Parent helpers are welcome, we hope to see you there cheering on all the students 😊
Swimming will begin in week 6, forms have been sent home late last week if they could be returned ASAP that would be greatly appreciated.
The Prep Team
Miss I, Mr Pepi and Miss Gallo

This term we have been focusing on present, past and future and how the passing of time is recorded on calendars and by the seasons passing. As part of our study the students enjoyed a visit to McCrae Homestead built in the 1840’s. We learnt about the indigenous owners of the land, the games children played, how to make butter and how everyone shared bedrooms.

It's here!! NAPLAN week! Since the beginning on Term 2, we have been preparing our Year 3 students to tackle the NAPLAN through online practice tests to familiarise them with the online formatting, as well as reviewing previous years' tests so the questioning formats will not be unfamiliar. In addition, we have been studying and writing persuasive texts to ensure students are well prepared for any writing task the NAPLAN may throw at them. With all the practice students have had in writing persuasives, don't be surprised if they write you a letter attempting to convince you why they NEED a new pet! The Year 4 students have also been participating in the reviewing of previous tests, to help fill the gap due to the lack of NAPLAN in 2020, therefore setting them up well for next year to tackle it.
NAPLAN practice has tied in well with the curriculum currently being taught. In mathematics, students are currently learning about multiplication and division, focusing on several times tables a week, as well as methods to help them solve multiplication problems quickly and efficiently. Times tables covered so far are 5x, 10x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 3x, 6x and we are now looking into 7x and 9x – so feel free to test your child with random times table questions from these! Further to the core mathematics skills, we have also covered learning centred around temperature, area, and time.
Our integrated learning topic for this term is bringing a bit of energy and excitement to the classroom as we investigate The Age of Exploration, specifically looking around the 1400 - 1700 period. The current focus area is pirates of the past, with students showing high enthusiasm as we learn about their lives.
Mother’s Day was a great success because of our hard work to fill our Mother’s buckets. We wrote letters and hoped our mums enjoyed them. We all had the topic that our mum should deserve ‘Mother of the Year’. We all wrote a persuasive writing piece containing an introduction, three reasons and a conclusion. They were then laminated and given to our sweet mothers.
In our maths subject we have been learning fractions and fraction addition. Such as three fourths plus one fourth which would equal one whole but those are just the basics. For a harder and more encouraging side of the fraction addition we have improper fraction addition consisting of non-matching denominators. For example, two thirds plus five tenths.
In the inquiry lessons we have been learning about history through a historical trail. We have been looking at photos, artefacts, paintings, letters and living museums in the colonial times and making assumptions of what life was like then.
Now let’s chat about our schools ISS (Inter School Sports). This term ISS choices are AFL, Tee ball, Netball and Soccer. We play every Friday and some of the other schools we face include Chelsea Heights, Edithvale and Seaford. Everyone has been showing good sportsmanship each week whether we win or lose.
Grade five have been completing NAPLAN if you are not familiar with this the NAPLAN tests consist of reading, writing, language and numeracy. While doing these tests I have felt calm and encouraged to do my best.

This week the prompt was an image of someone called Professor Plum. This was the start to the story that students had to continue.
Professor Plum had been locked away in his laboratory for days now, barely even stopping to eat or drink. He rested his left arm on the dusty pile of books scattered across his desk, and with his right hand he gently flicked the conical flask in front of him. The red and orange liquid inside coughed and spluttered as heat from the Bunsen burner excited it from below. Professor Plum wiped his weary eyes; only the excitement of finally finishing the potion kept him awake. Just a few more hours, then it would be ready…
As Professor Plum wiped off the sweat from his foul-smelling face he laughed, a horrendous laugh “Mar ha ha!” After days and days of living in his attic and making his life living potion, it was finished. Today he was going to drink it and live forever. “Meowww,” Professor Plum had a calico cat called Pebbles. Pebbles had a very short temper. “Yes, yes, hold on you silly cat!" replied Professor Plum. "And now I shall drink my potion!” Glug. Glug. At first, nothing happened but then Professor Plum shrunk... and shrunk... and shrunk! IT HADN’T WORKED.

The NOVA scientist Professor plum also known as Nova scientist, Dr. plum. The NOVA corporation is a secret organization working with the world government, creating many cures and potions to help the world. Dr. Plum was tasked to make a cure to a crystalizing disease spreading around the world tasked by Site administration. He had no other choice but to stop this incredible cause. He flickered through his rusty books, searching for an answer until, he read this: ‘Entity 402, the Crystal disease.’ He rushed to a test subject and gave him the potion as he watched. Only 3 hours left. He did it.

The concoction of professor Plum 'Bloop Bloop Bloop.' The sound of the boiling beaker disoriented Professor Plum. He reached his hand closer towards the bottle and with a flash and a pop a streak of burning anti-sulphuric acid reached his wrist and marked it’s presence with an irremovable rash. “It will all be worth it in the end.” He said with his old husky voice. He had been perfecting his concoction for years and soon enough it would be ready and the professor could dominate his scientific colleges. He remembered their laughs and snickers. But finally, he would have vengeance. But out of nowhere the beaker combusted and… he was gone without a trace.

Just a few more hours, then it would be ready… Tap, tap, tap. Professor plum was getting impatient, he needed this potion finished by tomorrow. A large puff of smoke launched itself out of an orange bottle and into Professor Plums face. Professor Plum was getting extremely stressed. He was really desperate to make his dad proud. He promised him that he would make this potion especially for him by the 17th of December which was tomorrow and also his father’s birthday. Professor Plum eagerly grasped hold of the orange bottle and carefully tipped the liquid substance into the sticky blue substance. The potion instantly started bubbling. Professor plum took a large gulp of the bottle and his dad appeared…

The morning was warm, Professor Plum had just woken up from his slumber, He had been awake for days until now, but once he realised that his body had succumbed to rest, he jolted up-right and ran to his brewing potion, although sadly, it was over-cooked. The liquid was meant to be a light purple colour but it had turned to a mulchy, pasty green colour. Dread was all over his face, his one resort to escaping this laboratory, where he was being held captive by the king, was gone… Howls from his laboratory filled the castle above his room, that night none of the royalty slept.

In Music, we have been doing so much exploration through Term 2 and discovering new skills and abilities and here are just some of the highlights I’ve got to share.
In Prep, we have been crafting puppets and learning how to operate them. This is shown by being able to communicate in a new way to each other and to help students take turns in sharing creative ideas.Just recently the 3/4s have been completing their performances for the unit “Air Band” which helped push students to find their courage and truly express themselves over their favourite (And appropriate for students) music preferences. These performances were brilliant and highlighted what fantastic audience members they can be, listening and taking turns to offer feedback and positivity.
Finally the Chelsea Band now called “The Chelsea Talents” are into full motion and are about to add yet another song to their growing repertoire. Their musicianship really shines as they work collaboratively to reproduce classic and modern songs in a live band
There is always something on the stage in Music, and keep an eye out for future performances both in and outside of class.
Stay funky everyone.
