FUNTIME LUNCHTIME

This term our students are continuing to enjoy lunchtime clubs.

As student voice is important at CPS, many of these activities are student led.

These lunchtime clubs, provide opportunity for students to have fun and interact with peers who have similar interests and passions. They also enable students to form new friendships, promote peer social acceptance, engagement in teamwork, co-operation, and collaboration.

It also gives school staff by to get to know students outside the classroom.

NEW CHILD SAFE STANDARDS

STRONGER STANDARDS, SAFER CHILDREN

Victoria’s Child Safe Standards are a mandatory framework to protect children and young people from harm and abuse.

The Child Safe Standards (the Standards) commenced in Victoria in January 2016. After five years, we have seen how the Standards improve safety for children and young people.

Changes are being made to make our Standards even stronger and updated Standards will begin from 1 July 2022.

The new Child Safe Standards

The new Standards have been updated from 7 to 11 Standards and include new requirements such as:

  • involving families and communities in organisations’ efforts to keep children and young people safe
  • a greater focus on safety for Aboriginal children and young people
  • managing the risk of child abuse in online environments.

Victoria has over five years’ experience of mandatory Standards, so many organisations will already have well developed child safety frameworks.

EDUCATION WEEK

This week we celebrate 150 years of Victorian Education. Students have focussed on the changes in education over the years with the Year one and two classes enjoying a visit from Mrs Sargood. Loved the costumes!

Chelsea Primary School began in January 1912, with 65 students, in Hoadley's Hall, Main Road, Chelsea, Nepean Highway. Because of its oriental appearance, the local people called this hall “The Joss House”. A new brick school was built in Argyle Avenue and officially opened on 27 January 1915.

During the world-wide epidemic of influenza in 1919/20, the school was taken over for use as a hospital. The school children were transferred to the Congregational Church Hall.

A two-storey wing was built on to the school in 1921, and then another wing was added in 1927.

GARDEN CLUB

Thank you to Cathy, Youn-shil and Kirran for inspiring our passionate green fingered students every Monday at lunchtime. Our Kitchen Garden has been weeded, raked, mulched and seedlings planted.

This activity has already become a weekly highlight for students. Can’t wait until the first harvest!

 AND FINALLY……..BEST WISHES MISS GALLO

Foundation News

We cannot believe that it is week 5 of term 2!

We are so proud of the participation of our students at Athletics day. It was a beautiful day full of cheering, determination and resilience. The teachers and students were exchausted by the end of the day! The Preps have commenced their Family History speaking and listening activity for the term – My Special Object. They will be bringing in something special from their past to share with the rest of their peers. Our circle time focus has been around help seeking and who to go to for help. We are very impressed by the growth and independence the preps have been showing, by problem solving in the yard and going to a yard duty teacher if they require support.

Special news… Miss Gallo is getting married this Saturday 28th May and will be changing her name to Mrs Ioannou. FGALLO are very excited to see photos of their teacher in her wedding dress.

Love, the prep teachers

Junior School News

Wow, what an exciting Term 2 we have had so far in the Junior Team! Students have settled back into school routine so nicely, and it is so wonderful to see their smiling faces each day! Some of the special things we have enjoyed so far include immersive incursions and exciting sporting events.

At the start of this term the whole school took part in Understanding Bullying workshops, provided by Bully Zero. The junior students learned what bullying is, how to identify bulling, and how to help themselves and peers when they experience bullying. Students also discussed how to be a good friend and brighten others’ days!

Next up was the Whole School Athletics Carnival! Students enjoyed a day out to Edithvale Recreation Reserve where they could display their athletics skills and cheer on their peers. Junior students completed a range of events, including long-jump, 100m sprint, javelin, sack-race, and chicken toss!

If that wasn’t all enough, this week the junior students enjoyed an immersive incursion experience where they were transported back to the 1880’s! Mrs Sargood visited the junior students and showed them what the classroom experience of the 1880’s was like – we hope they prefer their modern day 2022 experience! Students enjoyed learning about olden schooling and even got to practice their cursive writing using ink! Well done on an excellent start to term 2 Junior Team – we are all so proud of everything you are achieving!

Middle School News

Well done to all the grade three students for an awesome effort during the week of NAPLAN testing.

The entire 3/4 cohort has been engaging in a variety of summative testing in readiness for the end of term school reports. We are pleased with everyone’s resilience during the testing times(excuse the pun).

Our unit on multiplication and division strategies is drawing to a close and we hope to see these strategies used throughout the rest of the year.

In writing, we have started a focus on persuasive text. Using texts, and debates and discussion, we have explored a range of presentation and argumentative strategies.

Through our integrated studies we have enjoyed discovering the language and cultural traditions of our local Boon wurrung people.

Senior School News

May has been a great month so far. We have had interschool sports, fun events and incursions. We hope that June is also a great month as well!

On the 3rd, our I sea I care ambassadors had an incursion where they performed a presentation on marine life to the preps. Our I sea I care ambassadors did a great job at presenting and so did the other schools that came.

On the 4th, we had a bullying incursion where we learnt why we should be kind and not bully, why people bully and much more.

Friday the 6th, we had a special mother’s day breakfast with fruit, mini quiches, egg and bacon rolls and coffee. It was a very fun event and people got more time to bond with parents, grandparent and special friends. Also on that day it was the district cross country. It was held at Cornish College and everyone who participated did a great job.

Monday the 9th was a very special day. 6L got a new student and we visited the Shrine of Remembrance. We learnt a lot about WW1 and WW2. We saw many old and important relics and artefacts. There was also a touchscreen boards where you could tap a country and see its peace rating. Australia was 13th. Other schools came and we lay down wreaths on honour of the soldiers who passed.

From the 10th to the 12th, The year 5’s and 3’s did NAPLAN. We hope they all did well and they all did a fantastic job.

On Friday the 13th, some say haunted, some say not. Our ISS teams did a great job at an away game against Edithvale Primary. Some teams lost, some teams won, but we all did an amazing job.

20th of May was a very fun day!  It was the Whole School Athletics Carnival. We went to Edithvale and participated in many events including shot put, hurdles, discuss, 100-meter sprint and we obviously cannot forget the relay. There was a teachers vs grade 6 relay but obviously the grade 6’s won.

26th of May, Thursday, was the Junior Mayor Day. Elodie was our head speaker and we had Rhys, Liam and Alex as our support crew. They all did an amazing job at presenting there speech. Sadly, we lost, Carrum taking the victory although we, with some other schools, were selected to be on the Kingston Junior Counsel. It was a very fun day and all the other schools had amazing speeches.

On Friday the 27th we had another ISS game. We played another away game, versing Seaford. It was really fun and we enjoyed it.

Whole school Athletics

Last Friday was our Whole School Athletics Carnival and what an awesome day it was. Students have spent the last 4 weeks practicing their events and they put all of their hard work on show down at the Edithvale Athletics Track! It was wonderful to see so many students participating and trying their very best and cheering on their team mates and fellow competitors! A highlight of the day was the Staff vs Yr 6 students relay, where somehow the Grade 6’s managed victory? (This may have had something to do with Mr Pipella tripping over his own feet and face-planting into the turf at the critical stages). We really have some extremely talented students at CPS who put in some great performances but most of all, and the biggest focus of the day was that everyone was having fun and we sure did that!! Congratulations to all that participated and thank you to all the staff for their amazing help and support also! The winning house will be announced at our next school assembly and students who qualified for the District competition will be notified in the coming week.

District X Country

We sent a team of 36 students from grades 3-6 off to the District X Country on Friday 6th May. Although it was a very chilly morning, our students were on fire and all put in a fantastic effort on the day! Thank you to Mr Pipella, Miss A and Miss Dwyer for all of their incredible support on the day!

Congratulation to the following students who have qualified for the Kingston Division event which will be held next Tuesday 31st May at Karkarook Park, Heatherton

Max 9th in 9/10 Boys

Tegan 8th in 9/10 Girls

Kade 1st, Ollie 8th and Liam 9th in the 11 years Boys

We wish them all the best and know they will do Chelsea proud!

Grade 3 and 4 Intensive Swimming Program

Permission forms for the Grade 3 and 4, Intensive 8 day Swimming Program have been sent home this week. The swimming program is part of our school curriculum and will run in the last 2 weeks of this term and is a fantastic opportunity for our students to practice such a critical life skill. We have a wonderful relationship with the Toby Haenen Swim Centre and the programs that they run are always thorough, professional and a big hit with our kids! Please return permission forms and make payment before Tuesday 7th June so your child does not miss out!

Sickness at school

If your child complains of a tummy ache, cough, cold or generally feeling unwell, please do not send them to school.  Every day we have quite a few students that are being sent home unwell.  It is certainly the season for it!

Could you please remind your child/children about hand hygiene and coughing into elbows to stop the spread of germs. Thank you for your co-operation.
