Principal and Assistant Principals Report

WHAT A START!
Welcome back to term 4……and what an exciting and fun filled  October we have shared! The rest of the term will see whole school Lifesaving program, Step up Transition Days, Year 6 Graduation and our fabulous Christmas Concert. Exciting times ahead!

SPRING FESTIVAL
Our Spring Festival brought our community together for a spectacular day of fun filled rides, market stalls, competitive auctions, delicious food and coffee and  great entertainment.

Thank you once again to our parent gurus-Sarah, Donna, Mel and Penny for your outstanding vision and also to staff, students, parents and our community for supporting the day.

Thankyou also to the Ray White Chelsea team for their generosity and fun in sponsoring our school and  supporting the day. It is really appreciated!

LIGHT IT RED-DYSLEXIA DAY
Wednesday 19 October was another special day of celebrations as we brought awareness and understanding of people with dyslexia. A super day with our community dressed in red, and a very creative paper plane competition . Great work Ollie! And thank you to the Student Voice and staff intervention team.

YEAR 3/4 CAMP
Our year 3/4 students and teachers headed off to Camp Rumbug for their long awaited camp. Students took on many personal and team challenges with highlights including canoeing, Aero ball, flying fox, archery, camp fire  and wacky races.   The chocolate mousse was voted the favourite food! Thank you teachers-David, Liv, Simon, special guest Maddie and support staff Shane, and Rochelle, for your amazing organisation and enthusiasm for making this such a memorable first camp experience for our students.

YEAR 5/6 CAMP
The year 3/4s went bush,  and the Senior team headed of to the sea this week to the Phillip Island Adventure Camp. The fun started with pelican feeding at San Remo (loved the facts!), settling into the 5 star accommodation and getting straight into some very challenging activities. Circotron, Giant Swing and flying fox were voted the best! More fun included night walk, visit to the Nobbies (was it really a shark Mr. Pipella?) , trivia and mini Olympics….food was ‘amazing’. Thank you to our senior team Sarah, Sam,  Tanya and Tom, specialists-Lachie and Miss Mac and support staff Tamlyn and Shane. Much appreciated.

Save the Date Friday 25th November …is fast approaching! Many families have already registered with already $4 000 already raised. Just amazing! Come and have a look at the eye catching display inside the front door, get your sprinting shoes and white gear ready for another fun event.

Monies raised will also contribute to our redevelopment of our Fowler street oval.

FROM THE WELLBEING TEAM-THIS TERM’S VALUE-

As parents, teachers and students, building resilience is quite often one of the most difficult of our values to work through.

Here is a great article from well-known psychologist Andrew Fuller. Andrew’s books and articles are always entertaining, honest and logical. This one is about resilience and families.

10 Hints for Creating Resilient Families.

Resilience is the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through life. When the inevitable pitfalls and setbacks of life occur, it is as if you have an elasticised rope around your middle that helps you to bounce back from hard times’.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
We are always very proud of our students and how smart they look in their Chelsea Primary School uniform. Our uniform encourages pride in students’ appearance and recognition of themselves as an integral part of our school community.

We thank families who support our uniform policy and have their children wearing full school uniform.

A reminder that bright hairclips and bows, dyed hair, leggings under Summer dresses and non-uniform windcheaters and tracksuit pants are not part of our agreed guidelines.

Necklaces, rings, large hoop earrings -all cause safety concerns in play and PE situations. These precious items are best left at home.

HATS ON!

It’s also hat time again. (despite the crazy weather) As outlined in our Sun Smart policy, students are expected to wear their hats (school approved) during play and lunch time and outdoor sporting activities. Students not wearing hats will be asked to play under the gazebo or shaded junior playground.

COLOUR FUN RUN

Foundation News

It is cold, wet and windy outside but that hasn’t bothered the preps at all. Everyone is in great spirits and our days at school are busier than ever. Assessments are underway as we prepare school reports and transition into year 1 is just around the corner. Shortly, teachers will begin class allocations and preps will write a preference list for friendships as they enter their second year of school. We’ve had a visit from our local fire department at Patterson Lakes and learnt about ‘safe meeting places’ at our homes and school.

We’re booked in for an excursion to Twisted Science on the 17th of November. You will receive a permission slip today containing further information.

Stay dry and let’s send our energy to the sun.

Regards,

Mrs Gallo, Miss I and Mr Pepi

Junior School News

We have had a wonderful Term 4 so far with a lot more to look forward to before the finish of 2022. We all had an amazing time at the CPS Festival with many Junior School families volunteering and attending on the day.

This term our Integrated focus is Geography where we are learning about Australia and its place in the world and the universe!! We are linking this Geography focus to our whole class texts in Literacy. This includes non - fiction texts about Antarctica and Australia plus the classic Australian poem ‘My Country’ by Dorothea Mackellar. This term we are also revising and consolidating our grammar and writing genres so we are all well prepared for next year.

In Maths we are also reviewing all taught concepts for the year to consolidate our numeracy concepts.

Later this month we will be visiting ‘Twisted Science’ as a part of our STEAM program. Look out for a permission notice in your child’s schoolbag very soon.

We continue to prioritise our student’s wellbeing with Good Learning Behaviours, our fortnightly RRRR sessions and Zones of Regulation.

Middle School News

What a very busy but fun start to the term!

For literacy this term, we have our new mentor text of Wonder that we are working through. The kids are loving this and are making some great connections between the novel and real-life situations. We are currently working on procedural texts and the features they have. The kids have enjoyed writing these. We conducted a practical experiment that showed the teachers making sandwiches following the kid’s procedures. This brought to light just how important it is to include detail in their writing.

We are noticing some of the grade 4 students are not completing their reading logs. This remains a requirement in term 4. A minimum of three nights a week for 15 minutes is all that is needed. These are checked every Monday. If we could encourage children to get this done, that would be fabulous. As always, we appreciate your support.

In Maths this term, we are concentrating on patterns, including shapes, integers and decimals. Along with this, we are also reviewing all the previous topics we have covered this year to really consolidate their knowledge. This will prepare us for upcoming assessment.

We have a few hands-on activities planned for students coming up in the next few weeks to allow them to apply the content knowledge they have learnt in a real-life situation.

If you are wanting some extra work for your child to do at home, it would be great to see them studying their timetables for 2-3 nights a week for 15 minutes. This will really help them to refine this skill.

For inquiry our focus is Geography. In particular, we have been looking at different countries around the world. So far, we have looked at Australia and had an overview of the different countries and continents there are. We will be focusing on Asia and Africa later in the term.

In week 2, we had our long-awaited camp and what a fabulous time that was. It was so nice to see the students in a different environment. Each and every one of them took on a challenge of some kind and displayed all of the Chelsea Primary School values to a very high standard. They should all be so proud of their efforts.

With the end of the year in sight, it’s important we don’t let school attendance drop. It is vital that your child attends school to avoid missing out on not only the academic, but the social and emotional aspect of learning.

Let’s finish the year strong!

Kindest Regards,

The Middle School Team xo

Senior School News

We have had an amazing start to Term 4! We came back on the first day of term and began our two week intensive swimming program at Haileybury. What a treat that was! The students were fully engaged in ten lessons over two weeks with terrific, supportive instructors.

Week three saw us back into a normal week of school, followed by this week where we ventured to Phillip Island Adventure Resort for camp. What an incredible time we had. Staying in suites, delicious meals, activities to get us out of our comfort zone, the most wonderful afternoon at the beach… this camp had it all. We are so grateful to the staff who came along on camp to give our students this wonderful experience – Sarah Ebbott, Sam Lawrence, Tom Pipella, Tanya Whiteside, Tamlyn Dwyer, Shane Smith, Lachlan Rundell and Courtney MacDonald. Student highlights included the giant swing, the twin flying fox and the circotron.

Amongst all the fun outside of the classroom, inside has been equally as great. We started a new novel study, this time a Podcast called ‘The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel’. Our students thorough enjoyed this, hardly able to wait until the next episode each day. They are now asking to study and listen to season two!

During mathematics we have focussed on multiplication and division strategies. We are thrilled to see the progress students have made in this area, particularly their confidence to use new strategies to support their learning.

During inquiry, the Grade 5’s are focussed on Geography, looking at aspects such as continents and biomes. They will begin a school project on natural disasters very soon. Grade 5’s will also engage in what we call ‘Leading Learning’ where they will showcase their own talents and passions through teaching their class. The Grade 6’s are focussed this term on Memory Books, where they have the opportunity to look back on their years of primary school and put together a wonderful collection of memories.

What else is coming up? Transitions days with secondary school, Bike Education, Interschool Sport continues, a Science incursion, Grade 6 Big Day out, Grade 5 Big Day In…plus more, and we cannot wait!

Sarah Ebbott, Sam Lawrence, Tamlyn Dwyer, Tom Pipella, Tanya Whiteside, Karina Campbell
