WHAT’S AHEAD?
Can you believe there are only 3 weeks left before the end of term? And what an exciting time for all is ahead! Here’s a snapshot….
BIKE ED
Year five and six students continue their intensive Bike Education Program this week which culminates in their ‘Bike Hike’ to Mordialloc on Friday 9 December.
Thank you, Miss Mac, for organising this valuable PE program.
STEP INTO PREP
We loved having our new 2022 prep (Foundation) students visit over the last two Fridays. They collected their ‘prep 2023’ T-shirts and enjoyed some Hungry Caterpillar reading and creative activities.
This Friday, students will be visiting the Kitchen Garden to plant up their very own pots. Should be lots of fun!
STEP UP DAYS
Our current prep to year 5 students will get together with their 2023 new level on Friday 2nd, and will meet their new teacher and classmates on Tuesday 6th December.
CAROLS NIGHT
The Chelsea PS Annual Christmas Carols evening is being held on Wednesday 7th December. Each of our classes will perform a range of fabulous Christmas carols. The entertainment will commence at 4.30 pm and finish around 6 pm.
Please come along, find a place on the turf and enjoy our students performing carols they have been enthusiastically rehearsing with Mr. Rundell. There is also a surprise item which will certainly bring much amusement to the evening!! (Have the teachers been secretly practising in an after school hush-hush location?)
We look forward to catching up with everyone next Wednesday evening.
Please note that this is an alcohol free event.
PARENT THANK YOU MORNING TEA
Please put aside Monday 5th December at 10.45 to come along and join the staff in the Senior Building (BER) for a thank you morning tea for our parents and volunteers who have helped throughout the year. Our staff are extremely grateful for the extra support you provide. The vast range of activities is impressive, whether it is helping on excursions, classrooms, working bees, revamping our Kitchen garden, selling books, sorting lost property, organising our massive fundraising events, or participating in School Council. Our production further highlighted the incredible talents and time commitment of families.
CONGRATULATIONS MRS.WHITESIDE!
Every year, in honour of World Teachers' Day, Monash pre-service student teachers nominate a teacher mentor who has supported them in a way they will never forget. And this year, our wonderful Mrs. Tanya Whiteside has been nominated as a mentor who has made a lasting impact on pre-service teachers and their journey.
Congratulations Tanya, you are an incredible influence on these young teachers.
COLOUR FUN RUN
Words cannot explain the fun, joy and excitement our school community shared last Friday afternoon at our awesome Colour Run!
At 3.05pm…….just like magic, the sun peeked through as our white-clad students and teachers raced around the course and got sprayed with colour and battled through the inflatables.
We cannot thank our families and friends for supporting this event through your generous sponsorship and enthusiasm.
Huge, huge thanks to Penny, Sarah , Mel and Donna for your passion and hard work to make this event such an incredible success (and lots of fun!)
We hope you all enjoy the photos that will be shared over the next week.
Just amazing….It’s the Chelsea Way!
ELECTION DAY CAKES AND BBQ!
Thank you to our families who supported our Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall last Saturday.
Amid beautiful sunshine, our local community lined up not only to vote but to enjoy a tasty Egg-lection breakfast roll or Democracy sausage cooked by our experienced BBQ chefs. The cake stall was an absolute winner! A steady stream of sweet delights arrived throughout Friday and even more Saturday morning. All sold out by 2 pm.
Thank you to our amazing volunteers for your incredible assistance.````````````````````
………….. And to all the parents and staff who baked the wonderful cakes and cookies.
Just delicious!
Funds raised is approximately $2300. Just super!
What we have been doing:
We cannot believe that we have four weeks left with our gorgeous preppies. The progress they have made this year is astonishing and we couldn’t be prouder.
In mathematics we have been having a lot of fun in the classroom reviewing our knowledge of place value, angles and 2D and 3D. The students have had a lot of fun learning these concepts and have enjoyed relating them to the real world. Furthermore, in phonics we have been focussing on when to use ch and tch alongside developing our knowledge of open and closed syllables.
In reading and writing we have been focussing on developing our reading fluency and understanding how punctuation works. Additionally, we have been learning all about nouns, verbs and adjectives and embedding these in our sentences to give them more substance. The progress the students have made in their writing this semester is absolutely incredible.
What is coming up:
The Prep Team
Miss I, Mr Pepi and Miss Gallo
The end of the year is coming up fast. The students are very excited for the chance to sing the class Christmas song at the Christmas concert.
Dates to remember: December 2 – Step up
December 5 – Year 2 Camp preparation incursion
December 6 – Meet the teacher (2023)
December 7 – Christmas Concert
December 13 - Life Saving all day.
December 16 – Early dismissal
Great day at Twisted Science!
Despite the end of the year closing in quickly, students have been kept busy in all learning areas! The last couple of weeks have seen the end of our tennis clinic which was a ‘hit’ with students. Quite a few potential superstars were identified, and much interest around the sport was generated as students expressed their enjoyment of the program.
In literacy, students have had the chance to voice their opinions as they attempt to convince us of their point of view on topics. This has been done through writing persuasive texts. We have further reviewed many grammar and punctuation topics to ensure students are writing to the best of their ability. Comprehension of texts has been a large focus as well, ensuring students understand how to extract literal information from texts as well as create inferential meaning.
Numeracy is now in the review stage as we look at many concepts from throughout the year. Students are now consolidating all of the new information they have learnt in year 4, and have had the opportunity to demonstrate what they know through many assessments. All students should be commended on their resilience through this busy assessment period! Well done!
Integrated learning has sparked much interest as we have progressed through our geography topics while we learned about many countries around the world. Of particular interest to students was South America, where we found out about Snake Island off the coast of Brazil on which there are approximately 5 vipers per every square metre! No thank you! We are now learning about sustainability. We have covered sustainable energy and sustainable farming.
Not long until the end of the year! Take care over the next few weeks.
Middle School Team
After a jam packed start to term 4, which included swimming, camp and a couple of nice days off, students are fully back into the routine of learning. With the end of year fast approaching all grade five and six students have been working hard to produce wonderful academic results. With assessment covering the entire curriculum, we have discovered that our students have strengthened their knowledge in literacy and numeracy and hit new academic highs. Here are a few things to celebrate; 68% of our grade sixe students are working above level in mathematics and 57% of our grade five students are working above level in spelling. These results prove that our senior students have been active learners of the past year, well done.
It hasn’t all been assessment though, over the last two weeks we have been engaged in a number of extra curricula and collaborative activities. We have been playing well in inter-school sport, winning against schools such as Seaford Primary, twice! The grade fives visited Patterson River Secondary College to experience high school. Students engaged in sport, science and art which were run by staff at Patterson River. All grade five and six students have begun to rehearse dance routines with STOMP, a dancing program. This is a fun morning for everyone, even for those who wouldn’t fancy a boogie. Our senior students have also begun to practice bike safety in the bike education program, run by our wonderful physical education teacher Miss Mac. We couldn’t not mention a few other things like the intriguing podcast called Mars Patel, the grade sixes memory books and the grade fives inquiry unit about natural disasters which have all taken place over the last few weeks.
The senior students have a lot to look forward to in the following month, with so many events, excursions and incursions scheduled. We look forward to seeing all our wonderful students enjoy the remaining weeks this year and are so happy they have seen rewards at the end of their hard work.
FOUNDATION
Foundation students have been working on colour mixing and painting. The children have investigated primary and secondary colours and the effect of adding white to create a tint. Over the past few weeks students have created a ‘Seagull at the Beach’ piece, demonstrating a blue and grey tint. It was impressive to see all the students painting together and following a detailed process to complete their fabulous art work.
Year 1 and 2
In year 1 and 2 we have been learning about the art of Wassily Kandinsky and exploring colour, in particular complementary colours. The students have just completed a beautiful bright and colourful piece of art which demonstrated their understanding of colours that work well together, as they painted concentric circles and thoughtfully placed them against their backgrounds.
Year 3 and 4
In year 3 and 4 we have been looking at the artwork of local artist Laura Blythman and her beautiful, bright collages. Using her artwork as inspiration, the students painted their own colourful, textured papers and used these to design and create gorgeous landscapes such as mountain ranges, deserts and fantasy planets. This piece of art took several weeks to complete and the students worked so hard to create such impressive work.
Year 5 and 6
This term senior students have been exploring how artwork can express ideas or beliefs. We have discussed how artists use different materials and processes to help illustrate their purpose. Students have looked at examples of Street art in Melbourne and our local community, and designed mini ‘Me’ murals. We then created a collaborative cube mural, in the style of artist ThankYouX. Next we have looked at Pop Art, and the use of imagery from popular culture, media and everyday life. Students considered works by artists such as Andy Warhol, and are completing paintings that include elements such as bright, bold colour and contrast, and duplicating images. Students enjoyed using modelling clay to make food art that was colourful and whimsical.
