Term 1 brings great excitement that comes with the start of each new school year!
Our students have enjoyed our start up program-‘Set up for Success’, which promotes our school values, friendship, connections, and organisation in classrooms.
Our student leaders have already shown great and confidence and organisation contributing to school operations in presenting at assembly, planning upcoming events.
Student Voice in action!
Staff have provided Parent Information sessions, and wellbeing chats to start the year. The prep BBQ and start of the year assemblies have been a fantastic way to connect with our community.
BUILDING
We are all very excited that our building works have begun. Lots of digging (no treasure yet) and preparations for demolition. The safety fencing is up and much to the delight of students the new toilets are operational.
Next week the demolition is planned. Builders will be mindful of disruptions to classes during working time. Again, we thank everyone for their support and flexibility.
FUNTIME LUNCHTIME CLUBS
What fun lunchtimes are CPS! So many options for students to select from-Yoga, drawing, Funky Friday, running club, games, Discovery Play and garden time on Fridays.
Thank you to our teachers, students and parents for their time to making this great lunchtime opportunities happen.
BUDDIES
Our buddy program builds connections and relationships across all levels. Our preps are guided by their Year 5 buddies and are already enjoying reading times, play sessions and outdoor activities.
All other levels have a buddy class and enjoy shared reading, games, picnic lunches and literacy and numeracy games.
Even our staff have a buddy who checks in, shares a lunch, and celebrates special events.
PRIVATE PROPERTY AT SCHOOL
The start of the school year is an opportunity to remind all our families, that private property brought to school by staff or students is not insured and that the Department of Education does not accept responsibility for any loss or damage. Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff, and visitors. It can include items such as mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises.
STUDENT ACCIDENT COVER
The Department of Education also does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Families are therefore responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs including ambulance. Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers, covering a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private health insurers, however the Department is unable to provide advice on whether to, or which type of policy, to purchase.
Our school collects, uses, discloses and stores student and parent personal information for standard school functions or where permitted by law, as stated in the Schools’ Privacy Policy.
Please take time to read our school’s collection notice, found on our website privacy_collection_notice.pdf (chelseaps.vic.edu.au).
We ask parents to also review the guidance we provide on how we use [Microsoft 365/Google Workspace for Education] safely at the school and what parents can do to further protect their child’s information. If after reviewing the guidance, you have any questions or concerns regarding your child using [Microsoft 365/Google Workspace for Education], please contact the school.
For more information about privacy, refer to: Schools’ Privacy Policy — information for parents. This information is also available in ten community languages:
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) are a nation-wide, standardised series of tests for children in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 which cover writing, spelling, grammar, reading and numeracy skills. NAPLAN has traditionally been held in May but this year have moved to March.
Our Learning Tutors and teachers are currently working strategically with students in Years 3 and 5, to ensure that the children are comfortable with the technology they will be using, the testing format and the time requirements, to give their personal best.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
School photographs are scheduled for 21 March. Whole school, year 6, leadership groups, class and individual photos will be taken throughout the day.
Information detailing the various photograph options and the online ordering system will be sent home shortly.
RIDE2SCHOOL
Our Ride2School ambassadors-Augie, Hudson and Ruby have already begun collecting ‘active travel’ data each Friday.
We are all looking forward to March 24th, when we hold our Ride2School breakfast. More information coming soon.
Wow! What a beautiful start our 2023 preppies have had. Mr Pepi, Miss Culshaw and Miss Lawrence have been so proud of how well our preps have adjusted to school life.
We have just started our phonics program in prep and have been exploring the sounds ‘s’, ‘a’ and ‘t’ make. In math we have been practicing matching, sorting and organising real life objects. We have been practicing our fine motor skills by threading, colouring and drawing each afternoon.
On Tuesday all preps participated in the St Johns ambulance first aid session which explored how we can help someone in need.
A favourite for many of preppies has been our developmental play sessions were students get to make new friends and explore all of the cool things around our classroom! We are getting ready to take our decodable readers home on Monday which we are all very excited for.
This week all prep classes read ‘Have you filled a Bucket Today’, we spoke about the importance of filling up buckets by being kind and caring at school.
Welcome to 2023 Families of Year 1 and 2! We have all well and truly settled into our new classes for this year and got to know our new teachers and made some new friends. We have been working through our wellbeing start up program with a focus on our school values, zones of regulation and SWPBSM.
In literacy the juniors have been exploring new vocabulary, content knowledge and comprehension around our focus texts – Magic Beach and Miss Lily’s Fabulous Feather Boa.
In numeracy we have all been reviewing and expanding our place value knowledge through friends of ten, modelling through MAB and expanded notation.
We have had a few special incursions already - AFL Clinic for Year 1s, Hockey Clinic For Year 2s, First Aid sessions and our visit from indigenous musician and story teller – Scott Darlow.
Looking forward to a brilliant remainder of the term! The Junior Team.
Term 1 is well and truly underway and the 3/4 team wish to thank the parent community for supporting a positive and enthusiastic start to the year. Our maths program has kicked off using visual presentations to introduce new concepts. Term 1 has so far focused on revision of place value knowledge, with a progression in to addition and subtraction strategies.
Our literacy program utilizes the Spelling Mastery workbook to teach students the fundamentals of spelling through blending phonemic, whole word and morphemic approaches. MSL card decks support the learning in grade 3, whilst the Nessy reading online program is available to our kids requiring support and repetition. Reading and writing are interleaved through the use of a mentor text each week, which students have been enjoying thoroughly.
Our swimming program starts next week and we hope this dry and warm weather continues.
Year 3 students have begun NAPLAN training and have confidently navigated their way through the first practice test session.
Thank you the 3/4 teamLiteracy:
Literacy for the senior school incorporates the Science of Reading along with the Writing Revolution. Our aim is to get quality over quantity by teaching the students about sentence composition and syntax. We have two lessons that incorporate different text types and sentence structure, then we have our ‘What’s In The News Wednesdays’ (a huge hit!), our First Chapter Thursdays and 100-word Challenge/Assembly Writing on Fridays. This weekly format allows students to have structure and familiarity with their learning.
Every week, the senior school also has a focus on handwriting along with typing, allowing them to be functioning individuals in the 21st century.
Numeracy:
Numeracy involves 3 explicit lessons per week, with an open-ended problem-solving Thursday and collaboration Friday. The aim of a routine such as this is to allow children to apply their mathematical understanding in different contexts. Each Friday with collaboration work, the students get in groups and complete the daily mental maths column as a team. This encourages all students to present the knowledge they know and gives them opportunity to learn new skills of their peers.
Inquiry/Well-being:
Our start-up program has helped the senior school settle into the year fantastically. Each class has had discussions on the four values, the zones and the different types of good learning behaviours. We also have covered aspects of cyber safety which has been great to discuss.
Mr Munday has also introduced a few of his ‘Mr Munday Challenges’ which are a great opportunity to further develop our students understanding of our Country.
Each fortnight, we also aim to catch up with our buddy class. The purpose of this is to ensure some of the younger years have a friendly and familiar face in the school yard. It also allows our senior students to have some extra responsibility.
ISS:
Interschool Sport has officially started up on Friday 17 February against Chelsea Heights, away. We were all very proud of our Year 5 and 6s for the high standards of sportsmanship and teamwork that they displayed. It has been a blast! We have a few away games to start the season off which is a lot of fun.
What a wonderful, sporty start to the year it has been for the Students at CPS!
Hockey Clinics and AFL Clinics
Prep- Grade 3 class have been lucky enough to participate in Hockey Victoria ‘Hook into Hockey’ clinics and AFL Primary Play clinics over the last few weeks. Both sessions were run by professional coaches and all students had a blast learning some new skills and having fun with their new classmates!
Grade 5 and 6 Fitness
Grade 5 and Grade 6 students started their year off with fitness testing! Some old favourites like the Sit and Reach, Vertical Jump, Illinois agility test and the Beep Test were completed in week 2 and 3, giving the students a chance to really set themselves a challenge. Over the next few weeks they will take part in a Fitness Games unit, training those tested fitness components and then will complete post testing in week 7. Our senior students are a determined and hard-working bunch and I am confident that we will see great improvement and top results all round.
ISS has also began with a successful last few weeks for our teams. The sports this term are Basketball, Cricket, Kickball and Volleyball. This is always a highlight of the week for the Grade 5 and 6 students and their enthusiasm is even hotter than the temperatures of late!
District Swimming
District Swimming Trials were held last Friday at Toby Haenan and it was great to see all competitors put themselves out there and have a go! We had many competitive times and a team of 13 students will go on to compete at the District Swimming Competition next Friday 3rd of March at Pines Forest Swimming Pool in Frankston North. Good luck to all of the students competing! We know you will do your school proud!
Grade 3 and 4 Intensive Swimming Program
Swimming will start next Monday and run for the next two weeks! This is such a great program for our students and a fantastic way to learn such a valuable life skill! Enjoy Grade 3 and 4!
A huge start to the year and even more to come so stay tuned!
