What a month at Chelsea Primary School! So many special events and great learning!
RIDE2SCHOOL DAY
What a fabulous time we had today for our Ride2School Day today. It was wonderful to see so many students and families ‘actively travelling’ this morning.
Everyone enjoyed a tasty healthy breakfast sponsored by Michelle Galileos and Kingston Council.
Thank you to our ambassadors-Augie, Huddy and Ruby who helped organise the day, shared stickers with families riding, walking and scooting.
FISH AND CHIPS LUNCH
Thank you to the Chen family from Omega 3 Seafood, who generously donated over 400 lunches for students and staff this week.
The students and staff were so appreciative and voted them, ‘the best fish and chips in Chelsea!’
Thank you for such a lovely gesture.
BUILDING WORKS
Our site for the new buildings is now cleared. The huge diggers have left and the next step of underground works is now beginning. The timeline is on track for a Term 4 completion.
Can’t wait!
WHOLE SCHOOL PHOTO DAY
This year’s individual, class, family and whole school photos were taken on Tuesday morning. It was fantastic to see all students in uniform! We had over fifty family portraits this year which kept our photographers on their toes all day. We will let families know when the packs arrive at school.
FOUNDATION - YEAR 2 SWIMMING PROGRAM
Next week our Junior School begins their swimming program at Toby Haenen Swim Centre Chelsea Heights. A huge thank you to Miss McDonald for her terrific work in organising this program. Thanks also to the many parent helpers who have offered assistance with this program. All parent helpers will require a Working With Children Check (WWCC) before attending and nominating Chelsea Primary School as a volunteer organisation with the Department of Justice. The office will receive communication that your WWCC has been approved.
DOGS IN THE SCHOOL GROUNDS
Please note, dogs are not permitted in our schoolgrounds or Fowler street oval. Our Dogs in Schoolgrounds policy outlines the following points-
NAPLAN
Congratulations to our Year 3 and 5 students who participated in the NAPLAN assessment of Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language and Numeracy over the last two weeks. We were very proud of their dedication and diligence.

Hi all,
I just thought I would check in and let you all know I’ve been enjoying my long service leave by reading lots of books, of course on education, surfing once or twice a week, running and going to the gym as well as spending quality time with my family.
It’s been fantastic to be able to have this time enjoying the activities I love so much. I hope everyone has had a great term 1 with their new teacher and classmates.
I look forward to returning in term 2.

Dear families
While we know sleep is essential for good health, research shows that many children and young people are not getting enough sleep on school nights. This can affect thinking, concentration, memory, reaction times and mood.
Research shows about 12% of primary school-aged children, a quarter of 12- to 15-year-olds and half of 16- to 17-year-olds don’t get enough sleep on school nights. The recommended amount of time to sleep for primary school-aged children is 9 to 11 hours. For teenagers, it’s 8 to 10 hours.
Signs that your child is not getting enough sleep can include:
You can help your child to improve their sleep by:
If your child is still having trouble sleeping, has persistent problems with low mood, excessive daytime sleepiness, restlessness in bed, severe snoring or wakening unrefreshed, despite getting adequate length sleep, they should see a doctor.

Wow, what an awesome term Term 1 has been! We have loved every minute of it in Prep and boy has it been filled with many fun and exciting activities! Recently we had Harmony Day which was a wonderful day spent celebrating the diversity of others. We talked about our families and our cultural backgrounds - we also shared some delicious traditional foods from our culture! We especially loved dancing and walking around the basketball parade at the end of the day. Other activities that we’ve been busy with (aside from our learning) have included; the recent soccer clinics at Chelsea Primary and our work for clean up Australia Day. We are looking forward to many more fun filled events and activities coming in the next couple of terms!
In literacy, the Preps have been learning a new sound each day and how to use it to read, write and spell words. We’ve been looking at different tricky words as well- words we cannot decode. Our recent tricky words include ‘I, the, my, to and do’. We have been identifying which part of the word is irregular and using this word in a sentence. In literacy we’ve also been exploring our ability to extend sentences- using when and where to give us more detail about a subject.
Numeracy has been just as busy with our recent concept focusing on counting. We’ve recently covered patterns as well as comparing and ordering. We’ve been using various manipulatives and hands-on activities to help us dive deeper into these topics.
There’s only two more weeks of Term left but it’s going to be a busy couple of weeks! We have our swimming program commencing next Monday (27th March) and finishing the following Wednesday (5th April). We also have Hoodies up for Autism Day coming up which is on Tuesday the 4th of April. On this day students and staff are encouraged to wear a hoodie to show their support for people with Autism and to celebrate and embrace the diversity that autism brings to our school and beyond! On this day we ask students to bring a gold coin donation and funds raised will go towards the Amaze organisation. Our last day of Term will be Thursday the 6th of April and on this day we will have our Easter Parade and raffle.
Love,
The Prep Team
We can’t believe its already nearing the end of term one!
What a jam-packed term we’ve had getting to know each other.
This term we have celebrated Harmony Day, learned more about our Indigenous ancestors, completed our First Aid, had our school photos, getting to know our buddy classes, enjoyed a footy clinic and will be finishing off the term with our swimming program at Toby Haenan.
Most of all we have all settled into Year One beautifully by making new friends, adjusting to a new classroom and learning new things every single day.
We can’t wait for a massive term two to come!
Dates to be aware of:
Swimming P-2- 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st of March - Week 9
Swimming P-2- 3rd, 4th, 5th of April - Week 10
Thursday the 6th - Easter Bonnet Parade
Friday the 7th- Good Friday - No School
Term 1 has proven to be a busy period for our middle school cohort! Although it has been eventful, students have had the opportunity to enjoy the fun of swimming with our swimming program over several weeks. We also used this time to squeeze in some valuable NAPLAN preparation for our Year 3 students.
Speaking of NAPLAN, we would like to send a massive congratulations to all of the students for their amazing efforts and resilience in completing the assessments, which have now come to a close.
In numeracy this term, besides NAPLAN preparation, students have been consolidating their place value knowledge, and using this to solve addition and subtraction numerical problems. We have also been challenging students with worded problems to expand their usage of maths into real world problems!
In literacy, students have been learning rich vocabulary as found in our mentor texts and using these new words in writing tasks. We are currently exploring Civics and Citizenship as our Integrated learning topic, therefore have been aligning our mentor texts with this theme. The book “The Little Refugee” by Anh Do has been wonderful to investigate with students. Students have further been extending their writing by using conjunctions such as but, because and so to add valuable information to their sentences.
Harmony Day, another celebration squeezed into the term, is a great event to celebrate the varying cultures we have at Chelsea Primary School. Plenty of different cultural food made it’s way into the classrooms for sharing so everyone had the opportunity to experience the diverse foods from around the world.
It has been a chaotic term, however we have a few events to look forward to over the coming weeks, including our annual Easter Bonnet Parade!
Again, we would like to thank all students for their hard work in term 1.
The Middle School team.
This month has been an action packed adventure for our senior school students. We have had our wonderful camp, NAPLAN, high school visits, rugby clinics and highly competitive days at interschool sport. Students have also been working hard on creating a meaningful written piece of work for “What Matters” writing competition.
Although there has been many events on in the senior school, students are working hard in both literacy and numeracy. We have learnt about measurements in both area and volume, as well as practicing our skills with fractions. Students are identifying and ordering unit fractions, expanding and simplifying fractions as well as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions with common and uncommon denominators. In literacy our students have begun to develop written pieces of work for the “What Matters” writing competition. The competition spreads across the entire country and students are asked to write about a pressing topic that they are inspired to see change in.
Camp was a total blast! We camped at Merricks Lodge, and what a pretty camp site it was. Nestled deep in the heart of Mornington Peninsula, this sea side camp made us feel one with nature. Students engaged in a number of camping experiences. This involved orienteering around the large camp ground. There was a giant ‘Possum Glider’, where kids were hoisted up 12meteres into the air. We canoed in the camp’s lake, played a fascinating game with the paddles. Students also used bow and arrows to shoot targets in archery. Our nights were filled with fun. The grade 5’s had a disco and movie night. The grade 6’s also had a movie night and finished off with a trivia night.
In other news, over the past two weeks our grade 5’s have been participating in NAPLAN. It has been super encouraging seeing students take on NAPLAN with a positive attitude and the eagerness to achieve successful results. In between our NAPLAN sessions we have had a number of high school visits from Patterson River, Mordialloc and Kilbreda College. Students have enjoyed seeing past Chelsea students’ present information about their high school, which has had a nice touch.
What a jam packed, exciting month our senior school students have had. We look forward to all the exciting things coming up for the rest of term.
PREP
Prep students have had a fabulous start to Art at Chelsea Primary School. We began the year with some whole class and small group painting tasks to develop skills when handling paintbrushes, listening, sharing ideas and collaborating. All students delighted in painting the walls of the old Art Room before it was demolished!
The second half of the term has focused on artwork by Indigenous artist Bronwyn Bancroft. Students have been learning about different lines and shapes in her artwork and practising their own line drawing using oil pastel and crayon. These line drawings in either warm or cool colours will form the backgrounds for our art pieces in the final weeks of term.
YEAR ONE AND TWO
What a wonderful start Year One and Two have made to Art this year. Students settled straight back into Art room routines and had a wonderful time revisiting painting technique by painting the walls of the old Art Room before it was demolished!
We have been exploring the work of Indigenous Artist Jimmy Pike. Students have been learning to look at different pieces of art, question and interpret what they see. There have been some amazing discussions about the artworks and how they compare and differ. Students have been exploring the way lines make both geometric and organic shapes in the artwork and finding examples of these shapes around our school.
Year One students are currently working on an Australian Animal artwork, inspired by Jimmy Pike’s paintings of animals. The students have made sketches of their own and will choose the best to recreate in good copy with either warm or cool colours.
Year Two Students have explored Jimmy Pike’s painting of Australian Wildflowers. All students have sketched a page of their own wildflowers and will now be creating a piece of art using one or two of their favourite sketches.
YEAR 3-6
Over the past four weeks in Art the grade three to six students have been working on creating a self portrait with a difference. On one side they drew themselves and the other they drew items that represented them, in the shape of their face and features. They have turned out great and will be on display very soon for you to all see! Next we are moving onto further experimenting with using "lines" and different colours. It was also fun to be a part of a whole school art work for Harmony Day, where each student decorated a butterfly. This is currently on display near the front office.
HARMONY DAY IN ART
To celebrate Harmony Day all Art classes across the school discussed the meaning of Harmony Day and students shared some information about their diverse cultural backgrounds. Every student created a butterfly which represents them. They are all on display near the office. Can you spot yours?
