Principal and Assistant Principals Report

Acting Assistant Principal

I would like to introduce myself to you as the Acting Assistant Principal for the remainder of this year while Mrs Smith is on long service leave. My name is Tanya Whiteside and I have been at Chelsea Primary School for the last three years working in the senior school and as a Learning Specialist. I have also worked alongside Mrs Smith working on all things health and well-being, as well as supporting our curriculum work.

Prior to working in this beautiful community, I worked for sixteen years out at Berwick in a large school of over 1000 students, where I have taught every year level. I also did a short time at Chelsea Heights Primary School, have dabbled in pre-school teaching, and taught online with Swinburne University for five years.

I am passionate about engaging our students in their learning, and over the years I have created and implemented a range of good learning behaviours to enable students to be responsible and independent learners. I have presented for colleagues on a range of topics including sessions on behaviour management and having a positive mindset.

Being a local resident, having even been born at Chelsea Hospital, I thoroughly enjoy coming to work each day and being part of the community in which I live. Outside of CPS, I have two primary school aged children, and a seven month old groodle that keep me busy. I look forward to the semester ahead at CPS in this new role.

CPS BEHAVIOUR PLAN
Following a period of research, consultation with local schools and school council, we are ready to launch our school-wide behaviour plan (see imagery attached). The aim of this plan is to help support students to provide a safe and respectful learning environment for all students and staff. It is also designed to remove ambiguity of problem behaviours and create a common language throughout the school and wider-community.

Like all good plans, there will always be grey areas. In this case, we know our students with additional needs require a restorative approach and sometimes, something different all together. We have a range of strategies and staff who will continue providing a safe space for all problems to be worked through.

The plan is currently being rolled out in classes and the feedback so far from students and staff has been positive. We welcome all families to attend an upcoming webinar where we will provide further clarity, seek feedback and answer questions. Time and date to be confirmed.

2024 FOUNDATION (PREP) ENROLMENTS-CURRENT FAMILIES

The Department of Education (DE) has released a new statewide Foundation (Prep) enrolment timeline. The timeline advises families when and how to enrol their child into Foundation (Prep) at a Victorian government primary school, including Chelsea Primary School. The new timeline will apply for children starting Foundation (Prep) in 2024. Submission date was Friday 28th July. All government primary schools will follow the new timeline in 2023 to support Foundation (Prep) enrolments for the 2024 school year.

If you are a current family or have friends or neighbours in our School Zone, please access enrolment information on our website or alternately pop into the office.

Stay well this winter

Symptoms of influenza (flu) can hit very quickly and may last several weeks. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting the flu. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended from mid-April each year and is free under the National Immunisation Program for those at higher risk of complications from the flu.

Keeping our school community well
Parents, carers and students are encouraged to practice prevention measures, including:

· washing and sanitising hands regularly

· avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands

· covering nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing · staying home if unwell and consulting a general practitioner (GP) or Nurse-on-call as required

· staying up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Flu vaccinations
Flu vaccinations can be booked through GPs and pharmacies, many of which can also provide COVID-19 vaccinations. Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over.

Some people are more at risk of complications from flu and are eligible for free vaccination as part of the National Immunisation Program.

COVID-19 booster
The 2023 COVID-19 booster dose is available for everyone aged 18 and above.

Getting your booster dose remains the best way to prevent severe illness or hospitalisation, especially in people aged over 65 and those at higher risk of severe illness.

You can have your booster dose 6 months after your last dose or COVID infection.

Children aged between 5 and 17 years who are at risk of severe illness can also receive a 2023 booster dose. You can get your next dose at your local pharmacy or GP. To find one near you, refer to the vaccine clinic finder.

For more information about preventing flu, and immunisation, refer to: · Better Health Channel influenza flu immunisation fact sheet · Getting vaccinated against influenza.

Homelessness Week

HELP SUPPORT THOSE IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO ARE HOMELESS OR STUGGLING TO FEED THEMSELVES.

On any given night, 122,494 people in Australia are experiencing homelessness due to lack of available finances, family violence and many other issues.

Homelessness is not “rooflessness”. The majority of homeless are people in crisis accommodation, rooming houses, insecure housing, overcrowded dwellings or couch surfing.

We invite you to help during the month of August by donating non-perishable food items to the boxes outside the staff room at Chelsea Primary School by Thursday 31st August.

Examples of items are cans food like can fruit, can vegetables, can soups, can tuna, cereal, dry pasta, rice and noodles, oats, powder milk, dried fruits, pasta sauce, jam spreads, vegemite, honey, lentils, dried beans, crackers and noodles.

The food will be passed onto Chelsea Community Church of Christ to ensure they can continue providing those in need to alleviate their food insecurity.

Foundation News

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope this newsletter finds you all in high spirits and excited for what's to come! As we begin a new semester, we want to take a moment to reflect on the amazing experiences our Prep students have had, and also share the exciting upcoming events.

Channel 10 Weather Team: Our little weather enthusiasts have had a blast learning from the informative Channel 10 Weather Team. They've been exploring the wonders of nature and understanding the elements that shape our world. From sunny days to cloudy skies, our Preps now have a deeper appreciation for the weather around them.

Pyjama Day Fun: Who said learning can't be comfortable? Our Preps brought their A-game to Pyjama Day and showed us that even in cosy attire, their brains are sharp and ready to absorb knowledge. We had a delightful time sharing stories and engaging in various activities, fostering a warm and friendly learning environment.

Athletics Carnival: Our Preps showcased their athleticism and team spirit at the Athletics Carnival. Running, jumping, and cheering each other on, they learned the importance of sportsmanship and the joy of friendly competition. It was a day filled with laughter, excitement, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Getting Ready for Chelsea's Production: The much-awaited live performance with Chelsea's Production is just around the corner! Our Preps have been practicing tirelessly, honing their dancing routines, and preparing for their night on stage. They've been exploring the magic of storytelling and can't wait to dazzle the audience with their performance.

Phonics Adventures: In Phonics class, our Preps have been diving into the world of long vowel sounds and mastering the Floss rule. They've become confident readers, decoding words with ease and fluency. It's amazing to witness their progress as they embark on their literacy journey.

Creative Writing: With pencils in hand and imaginations running wild, our Preps have been constructing captivating sentences. From describing the time of day to crafting vivid character portrayals using action verbs, they've become budding wordsmiths, crafting tales that take us on fantastic journeys.

Mathematical Marvels: In the realm of mathematics, our Preps have been conquering subtraction strategies and delving into the wonders of place value. Counting beyond 20 and grasping the foundational concepts of mathematics, they've proven themselves to be true mathematical marvels.

Upcoming Stage Debut: We couldn't be prouder of our talented students! As they prepare to take the stage for their live performance, we know they will shine like the stars they are. The dedication, teamwork, and creativity they've shown throughout the semester will undoubtedly make this a night to remember.

As we begin this semester, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our wonderful parents and teachers for their unwavering support. It truly takes a village to nurture these young minds, and together, we're laying the foundation for a bright and promising future.

Let's celebrate the achievements of our Prep students and cheer them on as they take the stage! We invite all parents, friends, and fellow students to join us in witnessing the magic unfold.

With warm regards,

Mr Pepi, Ms Culshaw & Ms Lawrence.

Junior School News

Welcome back to Term 3! We have all settled back into class for the second semester and already have had a lot happening this term.

Production rehearsal and planning have commenced in earnest and students are practising their dances in Performing Arts classes on a weekly basis. Costumes and props are being organised all ready for our performances in September.

We all enjoyed a fun day last week dressing up in our pyjamas to raise money to support kids in care.

This week we have been refocusing on behaviour expectations at CPS. Your child’s teacher will have spent some time explaining the how and why ‘our actions have consequences’ and the steps involved in the process i.e. Remind/Refocus/Relocate and Remove. All our students have taken this on board and are taking it very seriously. Well done Juniors!

In Numeracy this term Year 1 and 2 are trialling the Prime Maths program. Prime Maths is an evidence - based program based on the Singapore Maths Model. It provides students with explicit models of mathematical concepts, strategies and problem solving and is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum.

In Literacy our focus continues to be on consolidating our phonics knowledge in Year 1 and extending our understanding of spelling rules and morphology in Year 2 through the Spelling Mastery program. In reading and writing our focus is on exploring content rich texts with a focus on vocabulary, comprehension, grammar and an exploration of various text types.

We are so looking forward to the rest of the term with so much happening.

The Junior Team.

Middle School News

This term year 3s and 4s have embarked on an extraordinary adventure to the world of ‘The Enchanted Wood,’ the first book in ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series. Students have thoroughly enjoyed following the journey of characters Joe, Beth and Frannie, together with their friends Moon-Face, Silky and the Saucepan Man, as they discover the many magical and peculiar lands waiting in the clouds above. We have also enjoyed dissecting the curious mind of Enid Blyton, discussing the many choices she makes as an author to make the storyline more interesting and engaging for the reader - that’s us!

Concurrently, these themes of magic and fantasy are also being explored by our students in writing, inspiring them to create their very own narratives! Careful planning of their narratives has allowed students to think deeply about the choices, they too, can make as authors to create engaging storylines. This includes understanding the structure of a narrative (orientation, build up, problem, resolution and ending) and the use of language features and new vocabulary that can help enrich detail and meaning. Students have had tremendous fun writing detailed descriptions of their settings and characters and have been experimenting with a range of literary devices, such as sizzling starts, non-literal words and phrases, dialogue and time connectives. Their little minds have been flooded with some enormous ideas, and we can’t wait to see this creativity come together in their published pieces. Watch this space!

In maths this term we are focusing on building students’ fluency in multiplication, first ensuring competency in the understanding of multiplication, to then being able to know and recall these facts in a range of ways, with automaticity and confidence. The ultimate goal then, is for students to use and apply these proficiencies to other mathematical concepts, such as fractions. Students have been rather receptive to our new weekly timestable challenge, (80 timestable questions in 5 mins!) and have begun recording their results on a graph to track their progress over the term. Another space to watch!

Looking forward to another wonderful term!

Art Room News

Prep
Prep students have had fun mixing paints and exploring textures. The focus was colour and learning about mixing primary colours to make purple, green and orange. Each week students learnt about making one colour and practised mixing and experimenting with adding more and less of the primary colours. After making coloured papers all students created a fantastic collage of ‘Solomon the Crocodile’ based on the picture book.

This term we are learning about the art of Eric Carle, focusing on a range of his picture book illustrations. We have started off the term with ‘The Grouchy Ladybug’ and students are using pastels and crayons in different ways to create textured paper which will be used for their own ladybug collage.

Year One
Last term students worked on pieces exploring drawing and symmetry. Students created symmetrical bugs with pastels and carefully drawn bees which are mounted on a printed honeycomb background. The students worked hard to show detail and shading in their bee drawings.

This term we have started a unit exploring Folk Art. Students are creating their own mixed media landscapes inspired by the work of artist Kerri Ambrosina showing bright colours and texture. Focus is on creating a foreground, middle ground and background. So far collage papers have been created and they are looking so bright and happy!

Year Two
Last term Performing Arts and Art combined to create our ‘Musical Art’ unit in which the students enjoyed designing and creating their own percussion, string or wind instrument. This involved planning, design and creation over several weeks culminating in a fun little performance on the last session! It was fabulous to see all the different, creative and unique instruments.

2I have been working on a sculpture unit creating bottle bunnies. Each student started with an empty bottle and through a lot of hard work, persistence, and imagination they designed, paper mâchéd, painted, and constructed a fabulous bottle bunny (and one bottle penguin!)

This term we have started off looking at Folk Art. Students have begun a mixed media collage inspired by the style of artist Kerri Ambrosina. These still life vases of flowers are already looking so bright and cheerful with the focus being on thoughtful colour choice and composition.

Year Three and Four
Last term the grade three and four students studied local artist Sammy Ann and created their own beach inspired water colour art piece. They really enjoyed using their own knowledge of the beach and water to create a painting, from a birds eye view. They looked great! We then moved onto creating Jim Dime inspired hearts, using heart stencils and oil pastels.

This term we have explored the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags and the meaning behind them for NAIDOC Week. This years theme was ‘for our elders’ and the students all created their own flags, honouring their elders. Next we moved onto using gel pads and rollers to make prints of leaves, the students really enjoyed this process. The following week the students cut up all of their prints and created a collage.

Year Five and Six
Last term Performing Arts and Visual Art combined to create a Stop Motion video unit. The students worked in pairs/small groups and enjoyed brainstorming, writing storyboards and scripts, creating props and then filming and editing their videos. The students did such an excellent job, making creative stop motion videos. They all really enjoyed watching and celebrating each others achievements.

The grade six students followed up with their classroom text ‘The Black Cockatoo’ and drew their own black cockatoos using oil pastels.

This term we have started exploring abstract collages and ‘Andy Warhol’ inspired Pop Art. It has been great to see the students having fun exploring colour, tone, texture and shape.
