Principal and Assistant Principals Report

What a wonderful term we have had! There was so much on offer for our students and they have thrived as a result.

It goes without saying that production was an absolute highlight. We send a huge thank you to Lachlan Rundell for his time, effort and commitment to this. He led our team and our students across the term and the end result was something we could all be proud of. Seeing the students so confident up on stage filled our buckets to the brim! Thank you to all of our staff for the time spent preparing costumes, props, hair and make-up, and to the families and community members who supported this. It certainly does take a village!

To end the term this week we had two events. Firstly, on Tuesday we brought our awareness to mental health through ‘RUOK? Day’.  We invited Tim Richardson along to our morning assembly, who is not only the Member for Mordialloc but also the Parliamentary Secretary for Health Infrastructure, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, as well as being a very important member of our school community as the father of Paisley. The day enabled us to make connections with Oakwood School, where students came in and worked with our foundation students and our grade five students further on mental health awareness. A highlight of the day was our senior student, Levi, who was spinning tunes over lunch time to bring joy and positive vibes to CPS.

On Wednesday we had our annual Footy Colours Day, which saw students and staff dress up in their team colours and engaged in a range of activities led by our senior students and Courtney McDonald. We always enjoy these days and seeing our students lead, as well as enthusiastically participate.

On a more academic note, across the term our teaching staff have engaged in a professional learning cycle around mathematics and the area of number, in particular multiplicative thinking and processing. Earlier this week staff presented their year level work on this, where it gave us all the opportunity to take the time to be proud of what we are doing at CPS.

A further recognition of our work was highlighted in an article in the digital magazine, The Bursar. Our Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) approach was put in the spotlight. Have a look, the evidence says it all and is something else we are proud of at CPS: https://www.bursar.live/families/explicit-teaching-the-old-school-approach-delivering-crystal-clear-results-5771

We hope you all have a wonderful term break, and look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 2 October 2023 at 8:55am. We will get straight back into our classrooms on this day. Our first assembly for Term 4 will take place the following Monday.

See you in Term 4.

Foundation News

Dear Foundation Parents and Guardians,

We hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the changing seasons. The past few weeks have been nothing short of fantastic for our Prep students, and we are thrilled to share all the exciting updates with you.

A Spectacular Production!
Our little stars took the stage by storm in our annual production. It was a true delight to witness their talents shine as they performed their hearts out. Here's a quick recap of our productions:
Prep P in "Rocky": The determination and dedication of our Prep P students were truly remarkable. Their rendition of "Rocky" left us all inspired and applauding their hard work.
Prep L in "The Little Mermaid": Under the sea, Prep L students enchanted us with their performance of "The Little Mermaid." The beautiful costumes, imaginative set design, and heartfelt acting created a magical experience for all.
Prep C in "Trolls": Prep C brought colour and joy to the stage with their lively performance of "Trolls." The infectious energy and musical talents of our students made this production a memorable one.

A Big Thank You!
Behind every successful production, there's a supportive community. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all parents and volunteers who contributed to making these productions a reality. Your time, effort, and encouragement were invaluable.

Exciting Excursions and Events
Big Goose Farm Excursion: Our students recently embarked on an adventure to the Big Goose Farm. They had a blast learning about and interacting with various animals. The smiles on their faces were priceless.
RUOK? Day: Students enjoyed our school’s assembly earlier this week and we want to thanks Tim Richardson for coming out to speak to us. We had a beautiful day completing RUOK? Day activities and loved our schools picnic dancing to DJ Levi’s great tracks!
Footy Colours Day: It was a sea of team colors as we celebrated Footy Colours Day on our last day of Term 3. Our students showed their team spirit by dressing up in their favorite team's colors. It was a sight to behold!

Looking Ahead to Term 4
As we bid farewell to Term 3, we eagerly anticipate the start of Term 4 on the 2nd of October. It promises to be an exciting term filled with more learning, growth, and fun adventures. We can't wait to have all our students back with us.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child's education. We look forward to another wonderful term together.

Junior School News

It is incredible how fast Term 3 has flown by!

The Book Week parade, school production, and the Year 1 and 2s exploration of poetry with a focus on limericks and alliteration have all been big highlights. We loved seeing everyone’s Book Week costume at our parade and what a stunning day it was!

A MASSIVE shout out to all of our hard working and wonderful parents who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get costumes, hair and makeup sorted for our little ones.

For the last week of Term 3, we have Footy Colours Day and RU OK? Day planned with an assembly and activities throughout the day to look forward to.

A reminder that assembly will be held on Tuesday the 12th and Friday the 15th is a Pupil Free Day.

Here’s to a fantastic and jam-packed Term 4 ahead!

Warmest Regards,
The Junior Team

Middle School News

As Term 3 comes to a close, it's with immense pride that we reflect on the incredible achievements of our Year 3 and 4’s.  These students have shown remarkable growth and determination throughout the term, consistently striving for excellence in the classroom and beyond. Many new concepts were introduced in mathematics, along with a substantial amount of review work across all learning areas, and students have excelled in every endeavour.  Well done everyone!

During Term 3, our Year 3 and 4 students embarked on an enchanting journey of literacy learning, delving into the captivating world of figurative language along with literal and non-literal meanings, all within the enchanting realm of "The Enchanted Wood," our mentor text. Throughout this term, these young learners have not only embraced the magic of storytelling but have also honed their linguistic skills with a keen focus on understanding the nuances of language. They've ventured into the mystical depths of metaphor, simile, and symbolism, gaining a deeper appreciation for how authors use these literary devices to weave tales that transport readers to extraordinary places.

Our numeracy curriculum this term has placed a strong emphasis on cultivating fluency in multiplication, equipping our students with the essential mathematical skills they need to excel. Each day, our students have enthusiastically risen to the challenge of mastering times tables, with daily drills and exercises designed to boost their confidence and competence in this fundamental area of mathematics. The ultimate goal has been to foster not only an understanding of multiplication but also fluency, where calculations become second nature. As Term 3 draws to a close, it's evident that our students have made significant strides, transforming mathematical hurdles into pathways of confidence and competence, setting a solid foundation for their continued mathematical journey.

One of the main highlights for the term was the Chelsea Primary School production.  Year 3 and 4 students have truly shone as they recently completed their production acts. Their performances were nothing short of remarkable, showcasing a tremendous amount of talent, dedication, and hard work. These young individuals demonstrated an impressive level of confidence, bringing their dances to life on stage.

Term 3 has been extremely busy, but everyone has risen to the challenge, and we couldn’t be any more proud of our students.  I think everyone has earned a well-deserved break over the holidays.  Enjoy your time, and we’ll see you back for the beginning of term 4.

Senior School News

Wow! It’s been another BIG month of activities and learning for the Senior School. How is it the end of Term 3 already?! Here are some highlights and upcoming events into Term 4 🎆

Production - ‘Journey into the Chelsea Cinema’

How AMAZING was the production this year?! 🤩 The Grade 5s and 6s definitely brought their A-game to the senior school production night (6s: both nights) with amazing dancing, acting, costumes, props, backstage support and positive energy to each performance. From the 5s doing Footloose and Grease to the 6s presenting Back in Time (Back to the Future) and Bohemian Rhapsody from Wayne’s World, it was a show to remember. Thank you very much to all the families for their support via costume making/finding/buying, donations, props and your attendance to the show.

Literacy

It was fantastic fun to complete Book Week in late August with some excellent costumes by our senior kids, and teachers 😉 We recently finished our term 3 novel ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman and my goodness, what an ending! The kids loved connecting with Felix, Zelda, Barney and the other characters as they learned that sometimes the most beautiful moments and strongest relationships can be forged in the darkest and most challenging moments in time. For any children that wish to continue the series, the next book is called Then. For writing, the students will complete some very interesting narratives this week after great efforts to deepen their understanding of this not-so-simple text type. There are some buddy authors amongst this Senior School without doubt!

Mathematics

This term the senior school has had an ongoing mathematics focus on increasing the fluency and confidence of the kids with their multiplication and times tables, on top of our regular curriculum-required maths units. Multiplicative thinking is such an important part of upper primary and lower secondary school maths, and life! We have loved exploring new activities to develop the kids’ skills and knowledge of multiplication and uncovered some awesome formats and games to learn by. This last week, the Senior School kids recorded their final time of skip counting their timetables (x1 – x12), and it was very pleasing to see in the data that there were some outstanding gains made over the term. We will keep the foot on the accelerator with this and promote families to identify as many real-life multiplication opportunities for your kids to practice with as reasonable.

Humanities

We followed up the incredible Geography Travel Expo with the students presenting their great efforts on their home project countries of choice – from South America for Grade 5 and Africa for Grade 6. The fascinating insights and information that was presented in these projects was wonderful and certainly achieved the outcome of making us all greater global citizens in the senior school 🌎Next term we will explore Economics and Business, with a focus on the importance of economic and financial decision-making in everyday life.

Sports

The Grade 5/6 children completed their Winter Interschool Sport program in late August, wrapping up an excellent two terms of aussie rules, netball, soccer and t-ball. The growth in skill, confidence and friendships across the two grades in each sport was huge, and the kids are excited to relaunch into the summer season of volleyball, basketball, cricket and kickball in Term 4.

On Tuesday 12th August, numerous Grade 5s and 6s represented Chelsea Primary School at the District Athletics Carnival at Ballam Park on a glorious spring day. As a team, the kids agreed to the following focus for the day and nailed all three: Have fun, do your best, and cheer loud for Chelsea! With this focus, Chelsea placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in 17 events, with many kids from the team progressing to the Divisional Champs on Friday 6 October! 🤩

Next term the 5/6s will complete their swimming program option during the second week of October. Please complete the permission form requirements as soon as possible and return to school.

Thank you!

With Term 3 ending and a very big Term 4 ahead of us all, we wish to thank you as the fabulous families of our Senior School kids for your support to the kids, to us as staff and for being a wonderful local primary school community. It takes a village 💙💛

Please stay in touch with us with any questions, queries or doubtful points,

Korean News

Preps
The Preps have had an exciting first term exploring the Korean language. They learnt how to say, annyeong haseyo (hello), and confidently respond in Korean during roll call. Through songs, games and visual aids, they’ve learnt seven colours and counting from one to ten. They have practised tracing and sounding out the colours and numbers in Korean written with the English alphabet. Last week, the Preps experienced wearing traditional Korean costumes (hanbok), a memory they will cherish as the photos will be on front cover of their Korean books. These books include all their work and will go home with them at the end of term.

Grade 4 and 5’s
Our Grade Fours and Fives have had an engaging time learning how to introduce themselves in Korean. They began by practising writing and pronouncing their names in Korean, followed by their grade and personal interests. Through interactive games and a variety of activities, they honed their speaking and writing skills and completed their own self-introduction posters.

Grade 6’s
Our Grade Six students have had an incredible opportunity to connect with students from our partner schools, Young Sun Primary School and Beom Il Primary School in Daegu, South Korea. Throughout the term, they learnt how to introduce themselves in Korean, including their name, grade, and interests. During our video conference sessions with our partner schools, our students put their language skills into practice and engaged in a rich cultural exchange. Our students shared fascinating facts about Australia and our school life through PowerPoint presentations, while the Korean students introduced us to Korean cuisine, landmarks, and even treated us to a K-pop dance!
