Principal and Assistant Principals Report

World Teachers Day –

Thank you to our wonderful teachers, as I've said before, the best in Victoria!

Your care, support and love for your job shine through every day.

This day is dedicated to honouring our teachers who play a pivotal role in shaping your future. CPS teachers are the guiding lights, the mentors, and the beacons of knowledge that light up the path of learning.

Teachers, you hold a great responsibility. You are entrusted with the task of imparting knowledge and instilling values, nurturing curiosity, and inspiring dreams. In your classrooms, you create the foundation for your students' future.

In this rapidly changing world, the role of teachers has evolved. Despite the challenges, you continue to be the source of wisdom and inspiration for the little ones you teach each day.

Your dedication and commitment to your students is unmatched. You go beyond the call of duty, offering guidance and being a source of support. You are not just teachers; you are mentors, role models, and sometimes, even like second parents.

On this special day, let us express our gratitude to our CPS teachers for their unwavering commitment.

Let us remember the profound impact you have on the lives of your students. "A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instil a love of learning."

So, as we celebrate World Teacher's Day, let us commit ourselves to valuing and supporting our teachers. Let us recognise the profound influence they have in shaping a better world through education.

To our teachers at CPS, thank you for your dedication, passion, and the positive change you bring to the lives of your students!

Happy World Teacher's Day!

Respectful behaviours

When parents, carers and school staff work together as one team, our students do better. Everyone at school, particularly staff and parents/carers, makes school a better place for learning and work.

Parent behaviour towards teachers is critical to maintaining a healthy and productive school environment.

Chelsea PS acknowledges the commitment of its staff to providing opportunities for every child to flourish. Education is a complex endeavour, and challenges are a natural part of the process. What's important is the dedication to continuous improvement and the welfare of the students. Open communication, a growth mindset, and a collaborative spirit among teachers, students, and parents can contribute to creating an environment where every child can reach their full potential.

Respectful relationships between parents, students, and school staff are crucial for a positive and productive learning environment. Here are some key points for maintaining respect:

  • Communication: Open and honest communication is essential. Parents, students, and school staff should be able to discuss concerns and ideas respectfully.

  • Active Listening: All parties should practice active listening to understand each other's perspectives and needs.

  • Boundaries: Clear boundaries and expectations should be set to ensure that everyone knows their role and responsibilities in the educational process.

  • Respect Teachers' Time: Teachers have busy schedules, so respecting their time is important. Schedule appointments and meetings in advance.

  • Empathy: Empathy towards each other's challenges and concerns fosters understanding and support.

  • Conflict Resolution: Disagreements will arise, but resolving conflicts in a respectful and constructive manner is crucial for maintaining positive relationships.

  • Courtesy: Everyone should treat each other with courtesy and respect, recognising each person's value in the educational process.

  • Model Behaviour: Parents and school staff should model respectful behaviour for students to emulate.

  • Support Learning: Show support for your child's learning by assisting with homework projects and fostering a positive attitude towards education at home.

  • Be Patient: Understand that teachers have multiple students to attend to and may not be able to address every concern immediately. Be patient and give them time to respond.

  • Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences: Participate in parent-teacher conferences and other school events to stay informed about your child's progress.

  • Respect Boundaries: Respect the professional boundaries between teachers and parents. Avoid discussing personal matters that are not directly related to your child's education.

  • Appreciation: Express your gratitude and appreciation for teachers' hard work and dedication. Recognise the impact they have on your child's development.

  • Be a Role Model: Show your child how to interact respectfully with authority figures by modelling respectful behaviour in your interactions with teachers.

A respectful and positive school environment benefits not only students but the entire school community.  Our teachers and staff continue to work with our students in explicitly teaching them behaviours aligned to our school's SWPB so each student understands each element clearly. We ask that parents and carers continue to support the school by reinforcing these learnings at home.

Parents, carers, and school staff have a relationship that can last many years. This is an opportunity to work together to create a positive relationship in the child's best interests. When this relationship is built on respect and trust, students learn better and feel like they belong in the school.

Respectful Behaviours within the School Community Policy describes the positive behaviour expected from parents, carers, and other adults in Victorian school communities. The policy sets clear standards of behaviour to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment for students, staff, and adults.

Mosquito Borne Disease

PROTECTING AGAINST MOSQUITO BORNE DISEASES

Victoria’s mosquito season started this month and will extend to late April 2024.

Warm and wet weather can result in greater numbers of mosquitoes and increased risk of illnesses from mosquito bites. While the overall risk is low, some mosquitoes carry diseases that make people sick.

The best protection against mosquito-borne illness is to avoid mosquito bites.

Families can protect against mosquito bites by:

  • covering up as much as possible with long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing
  • applying insect repellent that contains picaridin or DEET on exposed skin when leaving home
  • limiting outdoor activity if lots of mosquitoes are active.

To reduce the risk of illness linked to mosquitos, such as Buruli ulcer, promptly wash any new scratches or cuts with soap and clean water and apply a topical antiseptic and dressing.

Families with any health concerns should see their doctor or phone NURSE-ON-CALL: 1300 606 024 (available 24 hours).

Free Japanese encephalitis vaccines

Japanese encephalitis virus is spread to humans through bites from infected mosquitoes and can cause a rare but potentially serious infection of the brain.

Free Japanese encephalitis vaccines are available to protect Victorians at higher risk of the virus.

The Victorian Department of Health encourages eligible people who live or work in high-risk local government areas to get vaccinated ahead of summer, which brings an increased mosquito presence.

For more information, including what is considered a high risk area and eligibility for a free vaccine, refer to the Department of Health’s Japanese encephalitis webpage.

Thunderstorm Asthma

Newsletter heading: Thunderstorm asthma – be prepared this pollen season.

Grass pollen season, which typically runs from October to December each year in Victoria, brings an increase in asthma and hay fever symptoms. It also increases the risk of thunderstorm asthma. For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening.

Chelsea Primary School will implement a range of measures to keep our school community safe as the risk of thunderstorm asthma increases.

Many of our staff are trained in asthma first aid, and we will monitor the VicEmergency app to receive thunderstorm warnings, and, where appropriate, keep students indoors when weather forecasts identify greater risk.

During the season, there are some things you can do to prepare and protect yourself and your family:

  • If your child has ever had asthma, talk to your doctor about what you can do to help protect them from the risk of thunderstorm asthma this pollen season, including updating your asthma action plan. Taking an asthma preventer properly and regularly is key to preventing asthma, including thunderstorm asthma.
  • If your child has hay fever, see your pharmacist or doctor for a hay fever treatment plan and check if you should have an asthma reliever puffer. These are available from a pharmacy without a prescription.
  • If your child has hay fever and experiences wheezing and coughing, it is important to make sure they don’t also have asthma. Speak to your doctor about an asthma action plan.
  • Where possible, avoid being outside during thunderstorms from October to December, especially during the wind gusts that come before the storm. Go inside and close your doors and windows. If you have your air conditioning on, turn it to ‘recirculate’.

Protect yourself this pollen season – managing asthma and allergies matters.

Foundation News

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

Exciting Start to Term 4

The beginning of Term 4 has been nothing short of exciting! Our students have returned with boundless energy, ready to embark on the final leg of their Prep journey. They have settled into their routines smoothly, and we can already see the enthusiasm and motivation in their eyes as they approach Year 1.

Speaking of Year 1, our young learners are eagerly looking forward to the transition. It's heartwarming to see how they've grown and developed during their time in Prep. In Year 1, they will continue to build on the strong foundation they've established, and we have many exciting learning opportunities and adventures planned for them. They will meet their Year 1 teacher on the 12th of December. Year 1 class allocations will be made in the later part of the term. Careful consideration is given to creating new classroom. Please see you Prep teacher if you have any concerns.

Assessments Across All Curricular Units

As we move through Term 4, we are in the midst of conducting assessments across all curricular units. These assessments help us gauge the progress each student has made throughout the semester and ensures that adequate information is passed onto their Year 1 teacher.

With the days getting longer and the weather gradually improving, the excitement for the holiday season is building. The festive atmosphere is not only a delightful distraction but also a wonderful opportunity for students to explore various cultural celebrations and traditions. We have a series of seasonal activities and events planned that will add a touch of magic to their learning experiences.

Reflecting on the Year

It's hard to believe that we're approaching the end of the school year. As we look back, we're amazed at how much your children have achieved. They've formed new friendships, learned valuable skills, and explored diverse social contexts, all of which contribute to their growth and development. We are so proud of each and every one of them.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership with us on this educational journey. We look forward to the upcoming weeks and the joy of watching our students thrive and learn.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to discuss your child's progress, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are always here to help.

Warm regards,

Mr Pepi, Miss Lawrence & Miss Culshaw.

Junior School News

Wow, what an exciting first half of term 4 we have had in the junior years!

A massive congratulations to all students for their amazing fundraising efforts during Wear it Red for Dyslexia. It was great to see lots of students dressed in red to help raise awareness for dyslexia and funds for decodable books.

In both Year 1 and 2, students have been building their knowledge of narratives. It has been wonderful to read the many different stories the students have created.

We have also been enjoying using PR1ME mathematics in the junior years! Everyone loves the structure and routine of each lesson. Year 1 have been enhancing their applied maths knowledge by learning about graphs, time and money. Year 2 have been revisiting measurement, multiplication and division, and have loved using timestables facts to quickly solve problems.

We hope the Year 1s and 2s have a wonderful end to the year. We can’t wait to see everyone doused in colour for the Colour Fun Run. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Middle School News

Term 4 is upon us, and it is an eventful and busy time, as we wrap up 2023.

The year 3 and 4 students have just returned from school camp at the Briars, and have many stories of camaraderie, bravery, and friendship to share. The students of Chelsea Primary School were wonderful representatives and ambassadors. The support and encouragement shown toward one another was wonderful to see, and the accomplishments of so many are worthy of celebration.

The students have enjoyed learning about Ancient Rome during our integrated literacy unit, which has sparked many philosophical debates and discussions in class.

As the weeks count down to the Christmas holidays, the students will engage in written and online testing, and we look forward to celebrating their growth and learning progress with them.

Senior School News

Term Four is well and truly underway for our Senior School students, with lots of excitement and learning both inside and outside of our classrooms.

SWIMMING PROGRAM

The Year Five and Six students attended swimming at the Haileybury Keysborough campus during the first two weeks of term, which made for a very busy start!

It was wonderful to see the progress that the students made over the course of the program. Many thanks to Miss Mac for her coordination, to the teachers who attended and to parents and carers for gently reminding your child to bring all their swimming gear each day!

NUMERACY

Our focus for numeracy this term is to consolidate the concepts the students have learned this year. We have been systematically reviewing concepts that have already been taught and helping the children to consolidate their understanding. Our aim is to ensure that students not only grasp the concepts but also feel confident in applying them in real life situations.

HUMANITIES/LITERACY

Over the past few weeks, the Year Five students have been investigating the Renaissance. They have explored the various ways in which it marked a new era of intellectual, artistic and cultural growth and considered the great advancements made in fields such as literature, science, art and philosophy. Our exploration has sparked lots of considered classroom discussion and has produced some great works of art – including modern day interpretations of the Mona Lisa.

In Year 6, students have turned their attention to Debating. They have reviewed persuasive techniques used in speech, learned the art of ‘rebuttal’ and participated in their first classroom room debate.

Alongside this literacy work, students are preparing for secondary school and have attended two out of three sessions with the transition team at Kingston Youth. The rest of the term will be spent on Memory Book and developing Wellbeing Guide to assist future grade 6 students in their transition to secondary school.

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS

The interschool sports program has resumed for Term 4, with our senior school students representing Chelsea Primary in basketball, cricket, volleyball and kickball. We look forward to seeing them participate with the enthusiasm and good sportsmanship that our Year Five and Six students always bring to the sports field. Go Chelsea!

LOOKING AHEAD

As is always the case, Term Four will be a busy one with lots of events to look forward to including the Stomp Dance program, our CPS Colour Run, Big Day Out (Year Six)/Big Day In (Year Five), not to mention graduation for our Year Six students. We are looking forward to enjoying everything this term has to offer with our wonderful Senior School students before 2023 draws to a close.

PE News

We have had a busy start to Term 4, but who would have it any other way! It is very exciting to see the new buildings coming together, and Miss Mac is getting very pumped for a new indoor space for PE, especially on those cold and wet days! Our Junior and Senior classes are currently undertaking a Basketball Unit which students are enjoying and by the looks of things, we could have a few young stars in the making! Here is a bit of what else has been happening and what’s to come!!

Divisional Athletics

The Kingston Divisional Athletics carnival was held in the first week back of Term 4 with six CPS Students qualifying. Max, Zeddy, Naomi, D’Arcy, Tyler and Luca all represented the school and did us all so proud! Luca, our resident High Jump champion finished first overall in the 12/13 High Jump and went on to compete at Regionals the following week. He was up against the National Champion and finished in a very respectable 5th place.

Senior Swimming Program at Haileybury

Our 5/6 students took part in their 5 Day Intensive swimming program at Haileybury at the start of term. We are super proud of the efforts from our students and they way the represented Chelsea Primary School. The students reported that they loved the lessons and staff and enjoyed the great facilities, especially the diving board and vending machine! Those students who did not swim, completed a Water Safety project back at school and then presented to their peers. The standard of all was very impressive!

Hook Into Hockey Clinics at CPS

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have a visit from some coaches at Mentone Hockey Club who ran a clinic with our Grade 3/4's and some lucky Grade 1’s! The students had a great time learning new skills and trying out a new sport! Please check out the flier to hear about more great Hockey Program at the club.

5/6 Sailing Day

What is becoming a great little end of year tradition at CPS is our wonderful 5/6 Sailing Day down at Chelsea Yacht Club! It has been locked in for 1st of December so keep your fingers crossed for a sunny day!

Ray White Real Estate

"Having worked with Ellie, Briedi and the PM Team at Ray White Chelsea personally, I can recommend them with great confidence and I am sure it will benefit others in our community"Tanya Whiteside, Acting Assistant Principal, Chelsea Primary School

Ray White Chelsea are the official major sponsors of Chelsea Primary School for all of our fundraising events. They offer a Property Management service which is executed to a high standard and the team shows professionalism and passion for their industry at every turn. With a combined experience of nearly two decades, the team has the knowledge and the understanding to ensure the journey for their clients can be an enjoyable and stress free one.

They live by the idea that every client is handing them $1m and asking them to hold onto it until the client retires, and they go about everything they do trying to ensure that nest egg does not get any smaller.

With that in mind they ensure everything is done to ensure the client is protected whilst maintaining a fair middle ground for the renters as well. They understand the idea of leasing your home to someone or on the other side, leasing someone's home, can be a very stressful process and they work hard to ensure this can be done smoothly, and where possible, they go above and beyond for everyone they meet and work with.

While the entire team on the Sales and Property Management side of Ray White Chelsea is working to support our school wherever possible, the Property Management Team did want to offer some additional support to our school community and extend an offer of:

One Month Free Management for all properties brought to them, so please be sure to mention your affiliation to our great school!

If you are happy with the current Property Management service you use, please keep them in mind for updated information around legislation, which was recently updated or as an advisor on anything you may wish to check.

If you do not own an investment property and instead require help finding a new rental property, they suggest reaching out so you can experience the service they have come to call "The Property Matchmakers".

So often, they have renters who want to work exclusively with them and they are often heard saying "You have found the property manager you want to work with, now it's our job to find the perfect home for you!"

It is that LOVE and CARE that makes this team something else.

Call in to see them at 399- 400 Nepean Highway, Chelsea or, give them a call on 9781 9600 to see what is possible with them on your property journey.

School is better when you attend

Your friends and your teachers notice that you are away and wonder if you are OK.

Missing one day a fortnight is the same as missing 4 whole weeks of school a year.

If your child is sick or absent from school, you are required to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of the absence, by logging into Compass or by phone 9773 2055.

Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.

All Victorian government schools are required to contact the parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained.

This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind.

Chelsea Primary School Attendance Policy which outlines the school’s processes and procedures for monitoring, recording and following up of student absences is available on the Chelsea Primary School website.
