News from the Principal and Assistant Principal

END OF TERM CELEBRATIONS!
Words cannot explain the fun, joy and excitement our school community shared last night at our awesome Colour Run!
At 4.05pm…….just like magic, the rainy sky cleared and sun peeked through as our white-clad students and teachers raced around the course and got sprayed with colour, dodged the noodle maze and battled through the inflatables.
We cannot thank our families and friends for supporting this event through your generous sponsorship and enthusiasm.
Huge, huge thanks to Penny Medew and Sarah Williamson for your passion and hard work to make this event such an incredible success (and lots of fun!). To Margaret, Barbara and Andy for ensuring our community was safe while crossing the roads.
We hope you all enjoy the photos that will be shared over the next week.
Just amazing….It’s the Chelsea Way!

RIDE TO SCHOOL DAY –A FABULOUS EVENT!
Woo hoo, what a fabulous day we all last Friday, celebrating
Ride 2 School Day. Seventy five percent of our students walked, rode and scooted to school and enjoyed a delicious healthy breakfast of yoghurt and fruit.
Thank you to everyone who came along and shared the fun and to our students and staff who helped set up and serve!
Thank you also to Michelle Galileos and Kingston Council for supporting our delicious breakfast.

PHOTO DAY

School Photo Day went smoothly on Tuesday with class, individual and family photos being taken.
If you have any issues relating to orders please contact SchoolPix directly on 1300 766 055 or https://schoolpix.com.au/.
Our 2021 whole school photo will be taken at a later date, due to the wet weather.

2022 FOUNDATION ENROLMENTS

In preparation for the enrolment of Foundation students for 2022, we have begun our tours for prospective families.  We are now asking current families who have a sibling expected to commence school in 2022 to finalise your child’s enrolment by the start of Term 2 2021 by 30th April.  Enrolment forms can be downloaded from the school’s website https://www.chelseaps.vic.edu.au/page/168/Enrolment.
This will be of immense assistance in confirming class structures and staffing; all work force planning relies on confirmation of our 2022 Foundation students first.  If you decide that your child is not yet ready for school, the enrolment can easily be deferred to 2023.
By confirming your child's enrolment we have a better sense of how many places we can accommodate. Sometimes as many as two out of our three Foundation classes can be comprised of sibling enrolments.

SCHOOL FINISHING TIME
A reminder that our final Term 1 assembly will be held next Thursday at 2pm. on the turf led by our student leadership team.
This will be an opportunity to celebrate a wonderful term and farewell our beautiful ‘Miss Jacqui’. Thank you to all our teachers, students and families for such a great start to th year.
Have a wonderful break.
Students will be dismissd at 2.30pm.

CSEF Financial Assistance - application close on 23rd June 2021

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) applications close on 23rd June 2021

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership.  All are a part of a healthy curriculum.
CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The annual CSEF amount per student is $125 for primary school students.

Please read the information and application form on the Compass notification. You will need to supply a copy of your concession card to the office with your completed application form, either in person or email the school at chelsea.ps@education.vic.gov.au.

If you have any questions, please contact Ledam in the office.

Foundation News

We are nearing 40 kilometres into the marathon event of Term 1! The preps have almost completed the phonogram sound deck, take home readers are in motion, Harmony Day and the Colour Run was a HUGE SUCCESS! We could not achieve the same level of education and wellbeing without your ongoing support, passion and drive. Taking the emotional welfare of the preps into the account, they have truly found comfort in the structure and the daily routine at Chelsea Primary School. They surprise themselves each and every day and it is amazing to witness first-hand. One week to go!

Junior School News

What’s been happening?

We’ve had an awesome couple of weeks in Year 1 and 2! It’s been a busy term with lots happening at school.

Last week on Thursday we celebrated ‘We Belong Day’ during Harmony week where the whole school dressed in either orange or clothing that represents their culture. We had a day filled with fun, friendship and discussions about belonging. The 1’s and 2’s all looked amazing in their outfits and everyone had a great time dancing at the parade! The junior team made some amazing anti-bullying posters as well as completing other belonging and wellbeing activities.

The Year 1’s and 2’s also participated in the recent netball clinic at the school where the students played team games and practised their throwing and catching of a netball. Everyone was really engaged and enjoyed working as a team to complete the activities.

In literacy the junior team have been focusing on narrative writing where students have been understanding the features and structure of a narrative text as well as creating and developing characters for their stories. We’ve been exploring this genre in our lessons through our high-quality narrative shared texts.

In the Year 1 numeracy classroom we have been working on unpacking mathematical language, understanding what the words ‘difference’ and ‘equals’ mean. We have also learned more about shapes and their properties and once a week we use our problem-solving skills to solve a mathematical problem! In the Year 2 classroom we have been looking at the different addition strategies we can use to solve problems.

What’s coming up?

We are all so excited in the junior team for the colour fun run tomorrow! The event will kick off at 4pm with the preps starting first then the 1’s and 2’s will follow shortly after them. We are all so impressed with the amount the Chelsea Primary School community has fundraised- an incredible $19,000 which is a new school record! Well done to everyone! We are encouraging all the students to wear a white t-shirt or something colourful. We can’t wait to see everyone tomorrow afternoon!

Next week is our last day of term and on Thursday 1st of April we have our Easter Bonnet Parade. We will be making our Easter Bonnets at school next week and the junior team will be working with older grades to decorate and make their wonderful hats for the parade! If you could please send a hat to school with your child by Monday 29th of March as we will start decorating them next week before the parade on Thursday.

Thursday 1st of April is our last day of term and what an incredible start to the year we have had! We hope you all enjoy the last few days of Term 1 and have a relaxing and safe holidays! Term 2 starts back on the 19th of April.

From Maddie, Chris and Wendy, the 1/2 team.

Students will compete in either the 2km or 3km event and the top competitors in each age group, will have the opportunity to move on to compete at the District Championships which will be held early next term. Art News

Joy in the Artroom

We have had a wonderful start to the year in Art, I am so proud of all of the student’s artworks this term! In Foundation, the students have painted sea creatures and also drawn shape robots connecting to their Maths topic. In the Junior School, the students have looked at emotions in art and created different patterns and explored texture in their drawings. The Middle School students have been working very hard with creating their own version of Paul Klee’s ‘Fish Magic’ artwork, they had lots of fun with using the ink to create their colourful backgrounds. The Senior students have done an awesome job with their drawing and painting unit! I took the Senior students on an excursion to the park to collect things from nature to make a paintbrush. They used their nature brushes to then paint the background for their observational drawing of a magpie.

Well done Chelsea Primary School!

Have a safe holiday and I will see you all next term!

Best wishes from

Miss Hands

Senior School 100 Word Writing Challenge

On Friday 17 March we had the prompt ‘…but where did it go?’ she shouted. There were some very creative responses and great to see some joint efforts. Well done to these winners:

The Missing Name
But where did it go I sat there and pondered? I have no name, where did it go? That I do not know. Everyone has names unlike me. Like Finn, Ben and maybe Ilene. Where did it go? I do not know. Did it jump in a boat or fly away, maybe it ran away? Will I ever find it? I may as well try. But what if I fail? I shout and scream to no avail. I check in a draw but it is not there for evermore. But that’s ok. Perhaps having a name makes you plain. Maybe I’m special for not having a name.
Quinn & Tahlia – 6E

‘But where did it go?’ she shouted. As she heard something moving in the trees. She was lost in the middle of a jungle. ‘I’m lost!’ she said sadly. All she wanted is to find her lost puppy. A tear from her face dripped on the dirty ground. She could see from a distance a monkey swinging tree to tree. She sat sadly wondering if she would ever see her puppy again. She wiped her tears and suddenly heard a familiar bark as she walked closer and closer to the back and yelled in happiness, ‘It’s my dog!’ The puppy led the way home and was happy.
Rafael & Liam G – 5W

The forest was dark and damp. The wind howled as the moon swam peacefully through the night sky. Down on the forest floor, things were not as peaceful. Eva was running frantically, looking left and right, breathing heavily as she went. “But where did it go?” she shouted as she slumped at the foot of an oak tree. “Isla will be back tomorrow and I’ve lost her bird, how will I ever explain?” Ready to admit defeat, Eva slumped further to the ground…One hour later, she was awoken by a screech. “Opal!” she exclaimed, “I thought I would never find you!”
Matilda – 6E

The Tale of the Shadow Ninja
“Get her!” said Colonel Jung to the warriors to find the Shadow Ninja. “Colonel I can’t find her,” said the Shadow Ninja who was undercover. “But where did she go?” she shouted. BAM! Goes the cannons from the warrior’s ship. Suddenly a loud noise came from an old house. “Men check the house,” said Jung. Jung looked behind him and saw that all the warriors were on the ground except for one. That’s when Jung knew that she was the Shadow Ninja. The Shadow Ninja ran into the dark, creepy, cold, and scary shadows and hid from Evil Colonel Jung.

Bullying Poem Competition Winners

We Belong Day

On Thursday 18 March 2021 we celebrated Harmony Day and Bullying No Way Day with a special ‘We Belong Day’ at Chelsea Primary School. This was organised by our Student Voice Team. It was incredible to see everyone dressed in orange to represent harmony or in cultural dress. Our whole school parade started the day off with a buzz, uniting us all and ensuring that we all feel that we do belong. Classes celebrated in different ways with exploring cultures, discussing belonging and working through what bullying is. We ran a poetry competition for the senior school. The task was to write a poem about bullying. It could be any sort of poem. Our Student Voice Leaders, Tyler and Eva, read through all of our fabulous entries. The following four entries have been chosen as the winners of this competition. They will have a chance to read these out at assembly next term.

Big, bad bullies, bulling people
Powerful punches picking on people
Savage bullies sight her scared victom
Ferioucious fists flickering blood from the bullies fist
Impatient, intense, inhuman bullies itching closer to victory
Tough, thug, tormenting, tyrant bullies
By Lachlan L 3/4H

Bullying
Fun for few but fun for you.
Why this? Why that? Why now?
Smirks, smiles, signs.
Faking it for others.
Negativity never not around.
Awful, ashamed, anxious.
Why this? Why that? Why now?
Hurting heart heavy inside.
Why this? Why that? Why now?
Where is your respect? Where is your responsibility?
Where are your relationships? It shouldn’t be a question of my resilience.
Gone is this game you play.
Why can’t you stand in the shoes of others?
Why this? Why that? Why now?

Haiku Bulling Poem
I am in anger
You’re a ferocious bully
You are a bully
By Jack H – 6E

He didn’t fit in
Everywhere he felt like someone was ready to yell at him (for good reason)
He hated the way his brain wired,
The living hell that was being him.
When he was alone all he did was hurt himself to punish himself,
Feeling guily and filthy.
He told himself he didn’t want to hurt anyone,
He felt shame that he was still the one to blame after years and years of trying to love instead of hate.
Every day he told himself that he hadn’t changed,
He was the bully,
Years of self-hate inflicted on others.
He’d given up on forgiving himself.
It was too late.
